Goldorak (422), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 22, 2007 Sampled at the brewpub over the X-mas holidays.
Murky Wit-like "white" that was borderline peachy, with a thin, pearly white head.
Interesting combination of acidic and spicy nose, sort of like a bastard baby with a Saison father and Gueuze mother. And I don’t think it’s infected, but not entirely sure if this is exactly what the brewer was shooting for. Plenty of yeast, hay and coriander too.
Tart and dry, and really refreshing (not very a propos for the cold December evening!), the crans shine through in the sharp aftertaste. Pretty lively effervescence, that tartness in the end makes it dance on that thin line between funky good and funky infected, but it was pretty much thumbs up for me. MartinT (4241), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 17, 2007 Any first impressions?
-Ample foam crowns the cloudy pale yellow.
-A tantalizing spicy yeast character benefits from some crisp straw, wooden wilderness and subtle herbs. I am reminded of a Jolly Pumpkin witbier!
-White grapes, sturdy haystacks, wild yet mellow spiciness all coalesce into this intelligent, well-calculated tartness; this time I’m reminded of a Russian River delicacy!
-The lively effervescence enlivens the vinous, juicy body.
What if you dig deeper?
-A piney perfume is hiding amidst the aroma’s milky coriander.
-Flour is also present in the storytelling nose.
-The perfectly-positioned yeasty wilderness is breathtaking in its humility.
-Grassy hops dwell in the haystack.
-With intricately-linked flavors, this easily approachable yet immensely complex witbier experience was a fine example of this brewer’s talent.
-Once again, from reading other ratings, Voie Maltée beers seem to evolve and shift quite drastically from batch to batch. When they are in fine form, such as my growler of Muse or the snifter of Criminelle I had at the brewpub, they can be mindblowing experiences.
From the growler, opened a day after purchase. Rastacouere (5202), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Dec 28, 2004 Cloudy light yellow. Small white head. It seemed to me like a base beer to which one or 2 ingredients were forgotten. Overwhelming wheat in the nose, a bit lemony with slight honey suggestions on the palate and mostly coriander as far as spices go. Quite yeasty too, bananaish and grainy at that. Crisp mouthfeel, maybe a bit too carbonated for my liking. Just somehow seems incomplete.. This is the only beer I won’t remember from La Voie Maltée... DougShoemaker (2553), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 17, 2003 Spicey aroma, cloudy white, nice foamy head. Sweet, lemon bubblegum flavour, spicing comes into taste very well too. Light, bubbly, quite easy to drink lots of I'd imagine. A real treat, Thanks Bill at the Winking Judge! daboskabouter (1468), Fergus, Ontario, Canada Jan 16, 2003 Cloudy pineapple juice color. Banana and some citrus in the nose. Body is pleasantly sweet with malt with some citrus notes. Spritzy, but not enough to take away from the flavor. Faintly fruity, dries towards the finish with a light hop bitterness. A pleasant, refreshing Witbier.
