IBU 28

Bottle (500 ml). Bottled on 26-11-2009 so 5+ years old now. Split 2-ways.

Appearance: Cloudy amber brown with a medium easy to revive off-white head and some lacing.

Aroma: Figs, dried fruits, nuts, oak, toffee and light anise.

Taste: Moderate sweetness. Dried fruits and figs forward along anise (more than in the aroma and a bit too much for my liking), toffee, alcohol, nuts and a bit of carboard.

Palate: Medium to full body. Medium carbonation. Mouthfeel is a bit weak and borderline watery. Dried fruits finish with hints of cardboard.

Overall: Surprisingly interesting for a 5+ years old beer. There’s definitely a bit of oxidation, but nothing off-putting. Very figs and dry fruits forward. Tasty.

500ml bottle purchased at La Trappe a Fromage in Gatineau, Quebec. Golden amber in colour with a huge lingering white head, excellent lacing. The aroma is sweet, lots of citrus, some caramel malts, light alcohol, bread, lightly toasty. The flavour is lightly bitter, moderately sweet, some light alcohol, caramel and citrus. Sweet mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, sweet, lightly warming. If you didn’t see the bottle then you wouldn’t know that this was a barley wine. More along the lines of Gulden Drak. I do quite like this though.

Évaluation no. 74 Mars 2011.

Bottled sample (bottle date November 2009). Amber in colour with floaties, and fairly strong carbonation. Aromas are of sticky pale and caramel malts, herbal hops, and dried apricot. Flavours are of dry malt, light toffee, and more dried fruit. Much lighter bodied and less sweet than expected, given the sweetness on the nose. Not bad.

bottled in january 2011. pours clear dark golden orange with a decent white head, some retention and lacing. very off-putting aroma. acrid red fruits, toasted bread, loads of candied plain belgian sugga’, butter, buttered nuts, earthiness, vomit (!). average carbonation, medium body - oily and sticky, decent grassy-herbal finish. awful brew. clearly did not aged well..

500 ml from Guyon farm A: low caramel, fruity App: dark clear copper lasting beige head. T/p: full body with average bitterness. Medium carbonation. O: OK. The heatness from the alcohol is a bit too present.

Bottle. 500ml. Pours cloudy pale amber, with low offwhite head. Good lacing. Aroma is kind of bitter, sugar, alchool, yeast. Taste is of malt. Very bitter. Notes of sugar. That stuff seems a little bit too young, I would be curious to taste it after a year or two. Weird stuff, barley wine-wise.
