3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, - DEC 1, 2006
Any first impressions?
-A veil of head soon becomes a ring around the cloudy orange.
-Juicy fresh fruit and flowers leap towards the nose at first, soon followed by underlying sandy hops (Simcoe?). Quite mild for what they call an Imperial IPA.
-Luxurious caramel and biscuity maltiness engulfs the orangey, wooden, earthy hoppiness.
-The soft effervescence gives way to another great Voie Maltée body.
What if you dig deeper?
-It finishes mostly with cereal and biscuity sweetness, which I love, but as it is (improperly) announced as an Imperial IPA, the feathery leafy hops are terribly disappointing.
-There aren’t enough aromatic hops to spell out Imperial IPA, there isn’t enough hop flavor, and there isn’t enough hop bitterness to lather the tongue. Quite puzzling.
-BUT! Once you get through the misnomer and actually enjoy your glass for what it is, this is a very enjoyable strong ale.
On tap at Vices et Versa, Montréal.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Viper666 (1213) - Saint-Hubert, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 25, 2011
(hiver 2006-07)
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MJGG (784) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 25, 2008
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 beerbuzzmontreal (3429) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - AUG 8, 2007
Sampled on tap at Vices et Versa. Cloudy caramel pour with a thin white head. Strong aroma of citrusy hops. The flavor is dominated by C hops with a decent malt back bone and a solid bitter finish. The body is plump and the texture is creamy. As an imperial IPA it doesn’t stand out from the crowd but it’s well done.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Lubiere (7003) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 13, 2007
An orange golden ale with a thin lacing white head A caramel malt with restrained floral hops in aroma, with unfortunate diacetyl. In mouth, a nice IPA with light malt, very dry, and good floral hops, not very citrusy. Overall, rather nutty. Medium bodied. A bit thin for an I2PA. On tap at Vices Versa, Dec. 16 2006. with ProbstK.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 LadySusan (617) - Ste-Therese, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 10, 2007
Dark amber in color, this Imperial I.P.A. for me is one of the best of itskind. You get the aroma and taste of fruits and hops, with some sweet caramel added to it. I had it on tap at Vices et Versa. Looking forward to more.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Rastacouere (5923) - Montréal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 23, 2007
Clear orange pour with a slice of off-white head. Kinda catty smell with watermelon rather than citrus fruit aromas. The maltiness is rather meak despite some caramel and biscuit hints. Really quite sandy hop profile, powdered earth, dry and sucking the maltiness out basically, while its aromas are rather limited. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. It just doesn’t seem like the most pleasant hop selection.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 probstblueribbon (1980) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 17, 2006
5 oz. sample at Vices et Versa. App.: light brown-amber and clear. Aroma: caramel and toffee, diacetyl, a touch of fruit. Palate: med. body and med. low carbonation. Flav.: buttery, butterscotch and a hint of malt sweetness. A bit fo citrusy hops if you dig for it. A little bitterness and hop flavour to finish. Interesting, but no Imperial IPA.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Glouglouburp (4784) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 4, 2006
(tap at Vices & Versa) Cloudy dark copper topped by an off-white ring. Earthy orange on the nose, rather faint. The most striking feature about the taste of this Imperial IPA is actually its lack of taste. The very light body (borderline watery) and the very soft carbonation made for a lifeless mouthfeel. A little touch of caramel, some earthy orange and barely noticeable hops flavour with a mildly bitter watery finish. Alcohol was present as it couldn’t hide anywhere in this thin body. A good soutien-gorge can improve an ordinary body. This Soutien-Gorge needs a good soutien-gorge.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Quevillon (2014) - Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 4, 2006
Bu à Vices et Versa en fut (12 oz). Couleur thé un peu ombragé, petit collet avec de la dentel. Petit arome d’houblon fruité, faiblement amère. Goût d’houblon légé, agrume faible et un peu amère.
