11/01/2008: John Labatt Signature Porter has a roasty aroma with a note of coffee. The appearance in cola brown and clear wtih a foamy, frothy, beige-colored head that makes a decent attempt of sticking around for a bit. The sweet flavor is also roasty with a twist of licorice and root beer (herbal, root undertones). It is earthy and robust makes me believe that this is what early porters must have tasted like. This beer has a medium body and is smooth and clean on the palate. To be honest, this beer exceeded my expectations as I had set them pretty low based on the previous reviews. However, it is a bit more sweet than I would have preferred. Overall I think the Labatt Classic is still my favorite of the ones available in the latest Labatt variety pack which included Classic, Honey Lager, Porter, and Red Amber Lager.

340 ml/11.5 fl. oz. twist-off bottle (J02L84 0321)from 24-pack sampler purchased via Tmoney99. Rating #57 for this beer...

Bottle. Pours dark brown. One of the least flavorful porters I’ve tasted. Some chocolate, some malt, no hops. Very thin mouthfeel for a porter.

Bottle. Pours brown with a beige head. Malty aroma of coffee and cocoa powder. The flavor is like old coffee grounds with dry chalky chocolate. Drinkable, but not that good.

Wow if I hadn’t looked at the label I wouldn’t have guess from tasting this it was a porter. The aroma is slightly chocolaty with malt and not much else since it’s hard to detect anything. The appearance is brown with a small head. (that part they got right) The flavor is completely off the mark it tastes like a dark lager in every way. It has cola, malt, metal, and some chocolate. The palate is thin. Overall a complete joke of a porter. Shame.

Remember seeing this stuff long ago in the orange canadian package stores. Nice to see it is now getting imported. Back then it would have been much nicer though, as now I have plenty of other better choices. Dark brown, without any noticeable highlight color. Originally a thick head, fizzed out quickly. Mild toasted aroma + caramel. Sweet palate, but just not enough malt. And no hops whatsoever. More of an American Dark.

Bottle from trade. I cut my teeth on this brew in the 70s revisiting it after pouring oceans of craft and Brit porter over my tongue is ,as with all your teen beers, always a letdown. This was a sweet beer with light roast to it thin mouth and fast finish with a near cloying after taste ...the product of molasses and some brewers caramel...not a real porter in any sense.
