3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 ClarkVV (3578) - Allston, USA - MAY 26, 2005
UPDATED: OCT 4, 2007 2004 bottle from LarryPitonka, thanks André! Shared with Muzzlehatch on 5/20/2005. Pour is opaque and quite deeply brown. Sediment left behind in the bottle. Head is initially medium-sized and tan, but is quickly receding to cover. Smells of chocolate, quite salty but also, as Barry notes, it had a large diacetyl presence. Moderate roasted notes and some peanut brittle-like character. You can tell this is a lighter version, nothing wrong with that though. Flavor begins with an odd mix of bittersweet oranges and caramel/chocolate. Palate is very smooth, with extremely low carbonation, and a lightly gritty, not quite chewy mouthfeel. Light roast and more milk and dark chocolate through the middle. Hops and bland yeast on the finish with pure black malt bitterness. Medium body, seemed rather tired overall, but I still liked that it was quite drinkable.

I forgot about this one in cellar and now i know why it poured black with a tan head and had a little coffee finish but besides that it really did nothing for me with flavor or taste and was a little thin.CHEERS!

Draft at the brewpub. Black with a positively gigantic, dense, creamy head that you could float away on. Big buttery nose. Wow, you really can’t smell anything else but diacetyl. Rich, grainy, creamy body. Butter bomb all the way. Pretty much wrecked, and that’s too bad, because the appearance and what you can get of the recipe show lots of potential. Nice spicy hop finish.

The beer poured an almost opaque black with ruby highlights and a small creamy tan head. The aroma was tart with roasted coffee notes. The flavor was roasty but tart and very dry on the bitter finish.

Dark and handsome. Tastey however a flat, syrupy taste. It is thin bodied with a thick mouith like a stout should. smokey, chocolate sits very pleasantly. Smells like a porter... high octane

On tap at brewery. Was a dark, dark pour. Nice head - very creamy. Faint hints of chocolate and coffee, but not overwhelming. A very nice mouthfeel - full, but not heavy. A little on the sweet side - could use a bit more bitterness. Overall, a very likable brew.

I found this in the bottom of a box among the packing materials when I went to re-use the box. Ooops. Solid dark beer with a thin whisp of brown foam that diminished to an attractive ring. Great nose of dark sweet chocolate and coffee. Roast grain, dark chocolate, coffee bean, vanilla, licorice, ash, with a long bitter finish trending toward burnt coffee. Very enjoyable stout.

Bottle from Larry Pitonka. The beer pours to a very dark ruby brown body with a nice dense brown head and thick lacing. The aroma is licorice, fennel, tootsie rolls, and chocolate milk. The flavor is interesting. Milk chocolate, licorice, dark pitted fruits, vanilla, blackstrap molasses, bourbon-ish. The palate is very warming. Alcoholic and edging on astringent. Charcoalish feel.
