UPDATED: SEP 14, 2005 11-Aug-05 (Draft: LaConner Brewing Company in LaConner, WA) Though they claim this is a German-style wheat ale, it’s very light bodied, and very light flavored. The nose is very sweet for a hefeweizen, but also kind of sour, vaguely woody, somehow reminiscent of inexpensive blended white wine, and I don’t think of hefeweizen when I smell this beer. Very odd, but not a turn-off. The flavor is very light, just a mild flavor of wheat malt, but quite grainy and on the sweet side too. Very gentle bitterness is barely perceptable. Light bodied, much more like an American wheat on the palate. Straw colored, fairly cloudy. Small white head fades to a ring, leaving no lacing on the glass. Pretty lame, actually.

13-Sep-05 (12 oz bottle: Bottleworks in Seattle, WA) Just an update... I’m perplexed about this beer because the bottled version I have (which is admittedly pretty old) tastes distinctly like a Belgian Witbier, and actually a pretty good one too. Coriander is unmistakeable here, both in the nose and the flavor. Sweetness is fairly light, and a moderate tartness joins the coriander in projecting a definite witbier character. The body is light and very refreshing. Pale straw in color and fully cloudy. A tall white head caps the beer, gradually fading toa thin, slightly broken layer. Honestly, if the label didn’t say "Wheat" rather than "Belgian-style Wit", I’d swear I was drinking a different LaConner product. Did they mislabel the bottle? Given that the glass I had at the brewery was brewed much more recently than this bottle, and perhaps a major recipe change has occured, I’m sticking with that rating. But if I were to rate this bottle, it would be as follows: 7, 4, 6, 3, 13, total: 3.3.

The draft pout came titled a wheat, but it was a german hefeweizen and pretty darn good one at that. I came in the glass a hazy light butterscotch with a medium white head and moderate lacing. Banana and clove nose with some citrus notes. Medium body and slick mouthfeel. Flavor is banana, clove, and light citrus, and lots of clove in the finish. Well done.

Cloudy and gold. Malt sweetness had notes of white cake and yeast. Moderate amount of hops showcased an herbal zing. Estery hints of banana and clove. Tingly and refreshing up front, but then it becomes sticky and somewhat cloying in the finish. Decent wheat.

Tap@Brewpub. Banana aroma with citrus notes. Cloudy, pale yellow colour, white head, good lace. Light sweet to sweet in the finish, light bitter, fruity but not really banana nor citrus. Light bodied, lightly sparkling. OK brew but not exceptional.

Draught @ the brewpub. Pours a hazy yellow color with a small white head. Has a malty wheaty aroma with some weak hints of citrus. Has a sweetish malty wheaty flavor with some fruity hints. Sweetish wheat malty finish with some hints of citrus.

I agree with others this is way light and filtered. Wheaty and easy to drink, no real complexities, more like a Wheat ale, but really has no characteristics of a traditional style.

german hef? this is so clear, i would figure it a kristal. close enough. super clear light yellow/gold. minimal head, soft aromas of lemon and wheat, i cannot find anything else there. dusty and soft, very easy drinking, though fairly simple and one dimensional. certainly not a bad beer or unflavorful one, just kinda plain.

6/28/08 On draught at the Brewpub. Aroma is too sweet, with no classic German phenolics coming through. Appearance is clear yellow with a moderate maintained white head. Flavor is simple wheat malt, with classic light sourness and sweetness and nearly no bittering. Mouthfeel is spritzy and tangy with medium/light body. Overall, refreshing, but the complexity is way, way too low for a German hef.

Draft at the brewpub. Cloudy lemony yellow with light gray head and lace. Steady rising carb even in a very narrow tasting glass. Nice sweet banana nose. Mild, somewhat fizzy body, but very pleasantly drinkable. Wheat sourness really takes the stage on the mid-palate and the beer showcases it perfectly. Interesting mild spicy clove toward the end. Clean, slightly yeasty finish.
