2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle, found (unchilled) at local grocery store. Chilled rather rapidly in the
freezer for about an hour, while I did some work outside the house, in the warm
summer sun. So this one is being rated with the sweat literally still dripping
down my face, which seems appropriate. The label, and the bottle with its
twist-off cap, is, like all beers from "Lade Gaard", really beautiful, even
though it gives the impression of being brewed on a small farm when in reality
it’s brewed in a large industrial brewery.
The label says that this is actually a top-fermented beer, which means it’s an ale, not a lager! Norwegian macrobreweries (and even those pretending to me microbreweries) usually go for lager yeast for anything, as far as I know, so that’s a welcome surprise. And we’re not done there! It’s even unfiltered!!!! That’s gotta be the first unfiltered beer from a macrobrewery in many many years?! Sure, nowadays, we have Nøgne Ø, Haandbryggeriet, Ægir and some others who produce unfiltered beer for the grocery stores, but I can’t recall having had an unfiltered beer made by any of the macrobreweries! So the label has done a good job of raising my expectations! Also, I haven’t read the other few ratings of this one.
It pours a nice, slightly hazy, straw-colored light golden yellow, with a small, somewhat
creamy head. The head shrinks, but hangs on for the whole ride. The aroma is definitely that of a wheat beer, with wheat malt and
citrus dominating. A hint of light, fresh bread, perhaps. The mouthfeel is
moderately thick and smooth, with a good amount of carbonation, but the
carbonation still doesn’t "jump out", it’s more like it stays in the background,
and if you go looking for it, it’s there. The flavor is also that of a wheat
beer, with wheat and malt dominating. Some notes of citrus. Bready/wheaty
finish, with a note of corn/popcorn coming through in the aftertaste now and then. Also, some
other esters from the yeast, mainly a faint note of banana. The balance is also
pretty spot on, it’s slightly bitter and rather dry, and I can’t really
detect the dreaded Gran’s signature taste: "sour metallic", which (unintended
I guess) often invades many of their other beers.
Overall, a nice surprise from Grans, and I think they did a good job with this
one. It’s possibly the best beer I’ve ever had from Grans (only rivaled by their
Julebrygg which was pretty great a couple of years ago, but that’s a totally different
style), and definitely one of the most exciting beers to come from a Norwegian
macrobrewery in many years (that didn’t take a whole lot of innovation, now did
it?)! A bit boring, but that’s ok for this kind of beer. Also, great lawnmower/yard-work-beer!
I’m giving it a total score of 2.9, but that’s mostly relative to the other beers from Grans, and not really relative to the style. I’m not sure it that’s right or not, but that’s how I roll. I can’t say this is a great hefeweissen in the grand scheme of beers, but coming from Grans, it is.

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
500ml bottle from the local Rema 1000 store in Tromsø.
Hazy amber body with a tiny head ... or just a layer on.
Scents of hops, hay, much malts, and hints of linoleum floor.
Tastes a bit odd. Here are the hops and the malts, but also butter and paint.
Very smooth in the mouth, being a wheat beer, somewhat oily.
Aftertaste is low, some butter, yeast, metal, faint malts.
Overall not so bad, but the brewery should look at the diacetyl or paint notes, and figure out how and why these elements appear during the taste experience.
