COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A cutting edge ale and a Griff original! Fermented with Belgian yeast and then wine barrel-aged give it intense earthy and floral qualities.

(Draught at GABF) clearish amber with no head. Nose of chlorine, pine, honey and brett. Taste of florals, maple, caramel, toasty cherry and sweet. Smooth finish with a thin to medium thick body.

Variety I had was aged in Maker’s Mark cask. Strong grape flavor came through, and had constitution much like wine, thin compared to other beers but medium to thick compared to wines. A successful barleywine.

On tap. Pours with a tan head and a very murky brown body. Aroma is very fruity with caramel and tangerine. Taste is caramel, flan, berry, pine, brown sugar and a bit of smoke. Lots of crystal malt and lots of bitterness. Creamy carbonation syrupy.

On tap at Ladyface. Slightly hazy medium orange with a small off-white head, fading to a thin ring and sparse film quickly. Sweet caramel and earthy hops up front with some spiced fig and raisins, light oak behind--not picking up on the Belgian yeast or wine yet. Flavor adds some toasted grain to the sweet raisin and caramel notes. Seemingly sweet, but the generously hopped beer packs a lot of bitterness, peaking at a 6 in the semi-dry earthy finish. Moderate alcohol presence. Light to moderate carbonation with s full body. Interesting concept, but the components didn’t seem to come together well for me--I didn’t get the wine or the Belgian yeast, and the there seemed to be a little too much bittering hops.

pours a thin rich tan head and cloudy orange/brown color. Aroma is sweet medium malt, back bone of pine hops with cascade (approximately a malty APA). Taste is malty, spicy/pine hops bitterness. Has a fermented tang. (about a winter ale). Enjoyable for 1 or 2 at a time, then that’s enough spice. Medium/full body. Good effervescence.
