La Grisette, meaning "little grey" in French, is a nearly extinct style of a Belgian farmhouse wheat ale. It is pale-coloured, low alcohol, refreshing and light, and brewed with acidulated barley that adds a crisp tartness to the finish. The term was also applied to the independent, unconventional young women who left their country lives to work in bohemian Paris at the turn of the 19th century. The word ’grisette’ refers to a simple dress of gray fabric as well as the free-spirited women who wore them.

(En fût à Agoura Hills): Légèrement acidulé et biscuité avec un apport levuré adéquat. Des sucres résiduels traînent un peu encore et empêche une plus grande clarté.

Keg at the Library Alehouse, Santa Monica, 16/04/14. Hazed pale blonde with a moderate white covering that retains well. Nose is on the thin side, citric peel, light orange, straw, hint of spice. Taste comprises lemon rind, straw, corriander, spice, bitter orange. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok Belgian offering, drinkable stuff but nothing to excite the palate.

Pour on tap at the brewery, hazy yellow-golden pour with thin white head, aroma brought notes of peach, pear, slight earth, hints of lemon, grass, hints of biscuit and bread in there as well. Taste is a mix of biscuit, bread, some slight grass into lemon, peach, hints of tart and acidic malts, finishing fairly dry, slightly tart.

Samples at GABF 2013. There’s a mild saltiness on top of a wheat / rye / bread with fruity ester touches, lemon, peach, apricot. Some powder / flour resemblance to the malt, some dust, some flint / minerals and a bit of lemon detergent. Lightly sweet, tart, medium bitterness, medium to high acid. Yeast becomes a bit chalky to me in the finish, the malt is maybe a bit too chewy but the sourness and tartness are pretty nice and the body stays held together as the carbonation froths and fills the mouth. An interesting beer with obvious wheat dominance, fun to drink but doesn’t stand up to some other favorites of the night.

On tap at the Stone 17th anniversary festival. A hazy, pale yellow beer with a white head. Pale malts, lemon notes, a generic fruityness and a faint spiced peppery touch in the aroma. Medium body, dry, nice carbonation. Nice bitterness. Tasteful flavor with pale malts, some fruityness and a spiced, peppery hint. Better than the score indicates, but it would be unfair rising any of them. 130817
