Just in time for late night toasts, this year’s Midnight Special ports a deep chestnut brown hue topped with a dense white head. Crystal and Munich malts start this rich ale off with sweet malt aromas and flavors of caramel and chocolate. Beachwood-smoked German Rauch malt adds light smoky notes. Hops play only a supporting role to bring nice balance to this full-bodied experience with a relatively dry finish. Multi-layered and complex, this Belgian interpretation of a Scotch ale makes a great late night companion.

Tap at Blue Palms, Hollywood. Pours a clear, deep red looking black with minimal foam. Rich smoked nose with steak, soy, forest. Nice. Taste is surprisingly sour, well, tart and funky with more smoke and savory steak. Dry, dusty palate. Overly dry- typical Ladyface yeast attenuated to zero. But I like it. Moderate lactic acid backend. Pretty solid. This is an odd for sure. Loved the smoke. Just way too dry for style. Slight papery finish.

Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy caramel aroma. Fruity malty spicy caramel flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy caramel finish with some bitterness.

Pours a dark amber color with a khaki head. Strong wood note to the nose. A light smokiness and a decent malt sweetness of toast, bread, caramel, and dark fruit. Light alcohol and a hint of roast. Good smoke and wood notes on the flavor. Mild roast, sweet caramel, toffee, and dark fruits. Just a touch of alcohol and chocolate on the finish.
