Sampled at the Bistro 7th Annual Barrel Aged Festival on 11/10/2012. This sour/wild ale pours a medium orange gold color from the tap. Mediums sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity nad sweet, tropical and slightly tart. A medium bodied sour/wild ale. The malts are fruity, sweet, orange, tropical and tart. Hops are herbal. Decent carbonation. Nice tropical flavors, somewhat tart and funky, but mostly fruity and sweet. Nice beer, not quite sure it’s a gueuze, but it fairly tasty. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 NobleSquirrel (3286) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 21, 2012
Draft at Fobab. Probably my favorite of the fest. I don’t care if it isn’t a a gueuze. Pours a hazy orange/gold with a persistent white head. The nose is full of funk. Fruity and fresh, a bit of barnyard and lactic acid notes. Crisp and refreshing. On tasting, the fruity notes coupled with the funk and acidity make this unreal. Lush and quenching, I never even noticed the alcohol. Light bodied with a nice malt profile. Damn cool beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 valpoaj (531) - Valparaiso, Indiana, USA - DEC 15, 2012
Sample FOBAB ’12 - Clear amber pour with a thick fluffy white head - lots of lacing evident. Aroma is funky and yeasty with some citrus notes in the background from the fruit. Flavor is also funky, sour, tangy, residual sweetness in the background. Palate seems appropriate. Good beer - somewhat one dimensional, and never really picked up much on the fact that this one was laid down for 18 months in a barrel. Oh yeah, 11%? You gotta be kidding me! Good, but far from great
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 CanIHave4Beers (2495) - Des Moines, Iowa, USA - DEC 6, 2012
Fobab #6
Pours a godlen color with a good head and some nice lacing on the glass.
The aroma is fruity and floral with some horsey funk. Kind of a wild, funky, oaky kind of beer without losing it’s way as a hoppy beer. Not unlike Orval, but different.
The flavor is dry and oaky with plenty of juicy fruity character. The hop character remains pretty prominent and the sourness is very mild, which suits the beer very well.
I’m amazed to see that the abv on this is 11%, I would have never guessed it was that strong.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (4289) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - NOV 27, 2012
Sampled at FoBAB 10 - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a deeper amber hue, good haze, frothy white head sits atop and laces well. Mellow layer. Aromas are funky, gentle sourness, melon and citrus, gentle tart berry. Funky brett grows, oak, and barnyard. Bread, straw, and sour tang grows slowly as it warms. Initial medium bodied, gentle fruit grows, some tart lemon, oak, and brett. Growing melon, gentle sweet tart. Some oak, citrusy orange and lemon. Middle is a bit sweeter, more brett focus. Barnyard, straw. Backend shows more tartness taking over, oranges and grapefruit, lemon, lactic, and straw brett. Nice beer. Balanced, well integrated with firm flavors. It lacks intensity, but it has balance and some fun elements that taste good and work.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 marcus (5004) - Sacramento, California, USA - NOV 11, 2012
On tap at The Bistro BA Festival. Pours reddish amber with a nice beige head and a sour fruity aroma. There is a hearty fruit and caramel malt flavor with a dry vinous finish. This has a much higher ABV than a traditional gueuze, but still has a similar, though much more intense flavor.
