beerguy101 (3468), Newark, California, USA Aug 11, 2008 Sampled at the 2008 RBSG from a bottle from Greg Koch Cellar. This Eisbock pours a medium brown color from a 12oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are earthy. It’s kind of a bit past its prime and the oxidation is evident, but it seems to work here, it makes the sweetness much more evident. Carbonation was good. Very smooth tasting. Hides the 12.5% very well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. Eyedrinkale (3102), Beer Town, New York, USA Jul 25, 2004 Murky brown color with smallish head. Aroma of light roasted malt and mellow hops but thats all thats mellow about this magic elixar. Why would they possibly discontinue something this good? Tastes of over ripe oranges, brown sugar and espresso round it out. Magic on the lips. TAR (1998), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Jun 15, 2002 Huge mirangue-like patchy foam which leaves spectacular lacework. The surprising aroma, for such a big beer, is rather subtle: dominant hops, prunes, styrofoam, apples, and gaseous (which seems to provide cleanliness). I am talking super clean. Mouthfeel is heavily carbonated with the tiniest of bubbles of dryness; semi-full, creamy, and fluffy. Prunes, fruity malt, coffee/cream, and toffee. Finish is bitter. Green grapes also emerge in the long finish, as it warms. I would love to know if the abv is really what it says it is. Doppelbock/barleywine/extra pale hybrid? Needless to say, this was loads of fun!
WeeHeavySD (1699), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Aug 3, 2008 Or y2k with a bottle @ Stone today from Greg Koch’s cellar for us to taste during RBSG. Pours copper orange. Taste is big and big sweet caramel. and overall sweet. Taste is sweet caramel and overall kicking and kick ass. Love it. joet (1622), Fulton, California, USA Jun 11, 2002 Big round and sweet -- like a semi truck West Coast IPA smashing head on into a tanker truck barley wine. Yes, more light bodied than expected. Drinks well from start to finish -- even the bomber size. Opens up minimally from 53 to 58 degrees. I’m wondering how this would age. The hops and body are already round but not soft due to a good amount of residual sugar.
