An aborted batch of their Old Gnarleywine ended up tasting nearly as good as that they were hoping for, so they bottled it. God bless capitalism. OG 1.100 IBU 51.1

22oz. bottle. Ruddy orange-red brown color with a large light tan head. Sugary sweet and alcohol aromatics. Brown sugar, caramel, and some dark fruit notes. Residual sweetness and some bitter hop notes ain the finish. Mouthfeel is heavy and rather chewy.

Apple-cider color with some sediment. No overwhelming scents, smells sweet. Nicely carbonated. A bit caramel-y but totally brown sugar with an appropriate amount of malts. Slightly coarse on the palate but in a good way.

Pours copper with a spritzy head. Smells of sugar, soap, caramel, alcohol. Taste is bitter and peppery with some light caramel notes. You can really taste the alcohol in this one. Some melloe citrussy notes, but all in all not enough hoppy qualities to make this a good American example and not sweet enough for an English example.

22 oz bottle drunk all by my lonesome in this 95+ degree apartment. Pours a gorgeous deep red, lasting creamy off-white fine-bubbled head...quite sweet, sugary-malty nose with sharp orangey acidic hints, toffee and a bit of ash....body fairly malty, agressive acidic hoppiness coming in late, well-balanced sweet-dry structure, smooth and silky with just a bit of alcoholic bite, fairly sweet just to the edge of cloying at the finish with some smokiness. Really quite nice and dangerously drinkable.

Pours a two-fingered light tan head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Clear amber color. Brown sugar nose. Medium carbonation and heavy bodied. Starts sweet but complex flavor, hops are here balancing the brown sugar and malts, the high ABV is not noticeable. Good beer to savor. $5.45 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

Courtesy of Pailhead. Aroma and flavor are all caramel malt, with decent citrus hop bitterness towards the finish. Has a strange yeasty fruitiness in the finish, that I canít pinpoint. Really didnít get any brown sugar, though. Still very enjoyable brew.

I was suprised, but this has an aroma that smells a little like brown sugar. There was also a spicy note in the aroma. Poured an opaque amber color. Big ole fluffy dirty white head. Wow very bitter in the fore then switching to a minty sweetness that is slightly medicinal. Very unusual.

Hazy dark amber w/ small beige head. A complexity of hops in the aroma w/ wafts of leafy mint & grapefruit supported by a malty, caramel & brown sugar backbone. Thick, creamy feel. Sweet, mildly cloying flavour of brown sugar & burnt caramelized sugar w/ notes of grapefruit & mint. Dry, peppery, fairly bitter finish.

Bottle: Courtesy of beerguy101 via trade. Caramel aroma with a moderate citrus hop presence. Maybe a hint of brown sugar. Pours a bright transparent amber with an off-white head that lasts a minute or so. Nice lacing. Caramel and light banana bread. Again, maybe only a hint of brown sugar. Finishes moderately hoppy but something with the hops just seems off. I donít know what it is, but they just donít blend right.

Copper color with off white head. Aroma is acidic, slightly sour, loads of caramel, fairly sweet, fairly strong alcohol notes. Flavor is malty, bready, with burnt caramel, sticky, chewy, pretty sweet, with a healthy bitterness in the finish. A decent barleywine, on the sweet side, but good.
