An aborted batch of their Old Gnarleywine ended up tasting nearly as good as that they were hoping for, so they bottled it. God bless capitalism. OG 1.100 IBU 51.1

Draft at Latona Pub.

What if Lagunitas made a sweet barleywine?

It would have the characteristic Lagunitas hop flavors and sweet malts, and it woul d taste just like this, and it would be rather boring.

Just speculating, of course.

Pours a medium murky copper with faint head. Aroma is quite hoppy and sweet smelling. Flavor of sweet malts and a pretty big hoppiness.

Got it on tap at Brasserie Jo in Chicago after being told only three restaurants in town had it. Deep orange-amber color with a thin tan head. Fairly sweet aroma with some hints of dried fruit, almost a bakery smell due to the brown sugar. The sweetness continues to the flavor, with a bit of an alcoholy kick at the end. Enjoyable with a meal, but I wouldn’t drink this by itself, particularly when parched. More of a sipping beer.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2007 Not great for a barley wine. It has a strange sweet flavor, probably from the brown sugar, and a definite hoppy bitterness. Flavors are kind of fruity with caramel.

12oz bottle. Pours a deep reddish amber with a small disapating tan head. Sugarey sweet nose with hints of dried fruit. The sugar comes through in the taste and sits nicely on the tongue. It is not the best BW I’ve had but its decent, the hops on the front end are little off putting and the throat burn is also a little rough.

Orangish, amber color with a nice dissipating white head. Musty, leather aroma. Taste is sweet and hoppy as you would expect. Slightly alcoholic with flavors of plum. Sugary sweetness coats your mouth and lasts long after that final swallow. Very enjoyable and easy to drink barley wine.

12oz bottle poured a clear amber color with a tiny head. The aroma had a fruity sweetness with loads of caramel malts and a touch of brown sugar. The taste was too sweet with not much hop presants and just a touch of alcohol. Overall not my fav. beer from Lagunitas.

Murky brown-amber pour with a thin and foamy off-white head. Thin spotty lacing as well. The aroma is sharply hoppy with sweet fruit and molasses coming through more as it warms. The labeling on this one really threw me off as I was expecting more of a sweet brown ale. Once my taste buds told me it was actually a Barley Wine I was able to recover. Very hoppy on the front end, along with some peppery alcohol. The flavor mellows a bit as malt and fruits start to seep in. The finish is round and fruity with an alcohol burn leftover. Above average, and kind of unique to boot.

bright color. Whipped cream-like head that does not dissipate. Lots of pine here, caramel. sour in the best way. A loud rough beer, as it should be.
