An aborted batch of their Old Gnarleywine ended up tasting nearly as good as that they were hoping for, so they bottled it. God bless capitalism. OG 1.100 IBU 51.1

Murky brown-amber pour with a thin and foamy off-white head. Thin spotty lacing as well. The aroma is sharply hoppy with sweet fruit and molasses coming through more as it warms. The labeling on this one really threw me off as I was expecting more of a sweet brown ale. Once my taste buds told me it was actually a Barley Wine I was able to recover. Very hoppy on the front end, along with some peppery alcohol. The flavor mellows a bit as malt and fruits start to seep in. The finish is round and fruity with an alcohol burn leftover. Above average, and kind of unique to boot.

bright color. Whipped cream-like head that does not dissipate. Lots of pine here, caramel. sour in the best way. A loud rough beer, as it should be.

Copper with a moderate head, average lacing. Aroma is grapefruity and piney hops with caramel and a hint of brown sugar. Flavor is all of this, raw with alcohol burn. Enjoyable, but probably needs a little more time to sit.

Pours a rusty color. Smells is citrus hops, caramel malt, and a bit of molasses. Taste is terrific with a nice balance of piney-citrus hops with the caramel backbone. Very smooth with being 9.9%abv. I’m very glad I picked this up.

Brown sugar color. Smell of hops, citrus, malt, molasses, caramel, brown sugar and alcohol. Taste of malt, brown sugar, hops, molasses, pine, hints of bourbon and prunes. Nice bitterness at the end.

when i opened this and took a whiff i said to myself, "oh boy, this is the end of the night." Turns out it’s not nearly as alcoholic as i thought. Surprisingly smooth. Sweet caramel sensations and good dosage of hops. enough to distract you from the underlying alcohol....half hour later...man, this beer gets tedious

First on tap at Toronado, now in the bottle. Light brown head that dissipates quickly, dark amber color -- really good looking beer. Sweet aroma, some hops, alcohol in the nose. Spicy flavor, oily, slick, hides the 9.9% alcohol pretty well, sweet bitter finish.

HopBackDoc (474) - Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 8, 2006
Poured a burnt orange/brown/copper color with small off white head. Good lacing on my Duvel tulip glass. Nice sweet and hoppy aroma. Initial raisin-like fruit sweetness followed by brown sugar and malt. A decent hop bite at the finish coupled with a slight mellow alcohol warming. The alcohol, although being 9.9%, was not at all overwhelming. Another quality brew from Lagunitas.

"Sweet Release" - O.G. 1.100, 9.9% ABV, IBU 51.1... Lagunitas Brown Shugga’ is a reddish copper color and clear. It has a small yellowish head that quickly disappears. There is a low to mild amount of visible carbonation slowly rising up from the bottom of the glass. The aroma is sweet and sugary with hints of nondescript fruit and fresh, piney hops. The flabor is also quite sweet and malty with hints of caramel and some fruit. A resin-flavored hop bittereness comes out toward the finish and provides a moderate bitterness throughout the lengthy finish. This beer has a medium body and goes down quite smoothly. The alcohol is nearly invisible. This a pretty good barley wine that is well balanced and not over the top, but not quite unique enough. 12 oz bottle from Belmont Party Supply.

Bottle: Clean copper color with lots of frothy head. Aroma is more sugary and sweet with hints of malt. Taste is like carmelized sugar with notes of caramel, nuts, and vanilla. There is just a bit of warm alcohol presence in the finish to go with a subtle bitterness.
