A rich mahogany brown, like a strong sun tea with a touch of milk, foamy creamy beige head quickly fades leaving thick lacing and a sheet of creamy small bubbles floating on top. Smell reminds me of Japanese food, the tang of shoyu with the vinous herbal scent of wasabi mixed in as well as the meaty sweetness of Yakatori. ( I’ve been over here too damned long!) Sugary sweet front, feels a bit thinner than I expected, piney hops but not as strong as I thought they would be. If anything, I wish it was a bit hoppier to balance the cotton candy sweetness. I’d like to try the Old Gnarly to taste the difference. Alcohol well masked. Not bad, just left me wanting for more.

I enjoyed this one after I had my taste buds scortched by the Alaskan Smoked Porter at Obriens, however it was a nice retreat from such a harsh offering as the Smoke Porter. The flavors were very subtle, sweet with a slightly bitter finish.

Poured murky orange/brown with no head. Very thin off-white lace around edge of glass on top of beer. This beer has a very sweet aroma. Lots of sweet orange in the nose. Solid mouthfeel. Fairly flat, alcohol is rather prevalent in the sip. Bitter hop flavors lurk. More sugary taste appears. Pretty decent offering for a style I’m not too fond of.

Poured a translucent copper with burnt orange hues with a fast fading sudsy white head. Smells sweet, like sugar and candy, and also a tad hoppy. Toffee, orange peel, brown sugar, caramel, lemon, medicinal, whiskley flavor. Heavy, syrupy mouthfeel with a bit of heat on the end.

Bottled. Reddish/coppery pour with small head. Floral and citrus aromas. To me it could have been blended a little better. Very grassy ehh I don’t know. It wasn’t bad.

A nice strong ale/barleywine. Less sweet than most, which allows the molasses-notes of the brown sugar and the loamy maltiness to combine and play a larger role in the brew’s overall flavor. I’d like a more pleasing mouthfeel in a brew of this gravity. If you like this, give the Hairy Eyeball a try.

Pours a pretty clear amber with some head.
Smell is brown sugar with American hops. Kind of nice.
The hops really are at the forefront in the flavor, with the brown sugar coming through. Not a lot of malt flavor in there.
Mouthfeel is thin with carbonation.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Hoppy spruce/pine barleywine with particularly nice mouthfeel. No alcohol burn. It doesn’t seem like 9.9% at all.

on Draft omg! big fan of Barleywine...Pours a beautiful red coper hue, small to no head. Sweet honey and flowery aroma. Taste is pine hops, honey, molases. The alcohol is strong but it balances out the bitter and sour aftertaste. X mouthfeel... Please after a couple get up slowly.

Honestly this beer tastes pretty much just like hard candy... Not really what I would be used to in a barley wine (or botched barley wine). Couldnt really taste any molasses from the brown sugar. If you like sweet this is where its at, its also pretty unique in that sweetness.
