Big sweet aroma of honey, brown sugar, and sweet malts along with some Cascade hops. Flavor is very sweet upfront with a nectar like honey and sugar flavor. But the bitter hops do come through to balance in the finish. I think the fact that it wasn’t fully fermented to Gnarleywine leaves it a little sweet and sticky, but it’s still a very tasty barley wine. Maybe a little too grassy at the end. elihapa (1072), Honolulu, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 8, 2009 From bottle during beer tasting. Brown colored strong ale with a sweet nose of brown sugar and grain bread. A surprisingly well-balanced ale with accents of toffee, milk chocolate, and dark fruit. changeup45 (807), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 8, 2009 This pours out an amber-brown color with a decent sized head for the style and abv with some spotty lacing. The aroma is a little mild, hops, sugar, pine. The beer starts off sweet and sugary with some caramel malt then a blast of piney hops follow to dry, but soft finish. Pretty big hop profile here, definitely a bit sweet, but not too sweet and no alcohol burn at all. This is rather easy drinking for such a high abv beer. Lagunitas seldom lets me down. Good one. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 8, 2009 A- Clear orange hue, tan foamy head that is mostly sustained, moderate lacing
S- Boozey aroma, tones of molasses and brown "shugga", some fruity sweetness too
T- Sweet roast and caramel malts, sugary molasses, bitter coffee, finishes bitter with a stiff alcohol warming
M- Full-bodied, oily texture, mild carbonation
D- A unique brown/strong ale with flashes of flavor, a bit too cloying and boozey for my tastes, I would probably not go out of my way for a second tasting jeremytoni (1138), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Feb 7, 2009 This was a good beer! Don’t let the name fool you. It isn’t too sweet or syrupy, in fact just the opposite. Yes it does have a sweeter flavor to it, but it is much more of a good bitter ale with sweetness than the other way around. I love this beer and wish it was around year round! I love this stuff! Syd (911), Waconia, Minnesota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 6, 2009 Bottle pours red brown copper clear with very short lasting fizzy head and no lace. The aroma is brown sugar apple brown Betty. The flavor is serious malt sweetness pushing the sugar note right in your face, along with some ale fruit undertones to help balance the sweetness. The palate is rich and sticky. Overall, this is good as a sipper. Radek Kliber (4001), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada
