COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An aborted batch of their Old Gnarleywine ended up tasting nearly as good as that they were hoping for, so they bottled it. God bless capitalism. OG 1.100 IBU 51.1

Clear amber with touch of orange, medium-small head. Some piney hops, wood, and yes brown sugar in aroma. Pretty full body, can detect the alcohol a little bit. Balance of sweet malt and citrus hop bitterness. Manages just barely to stay away from being overly syrupy and thus possible to have a full one or two. Not my favorite but very good.

Aroma is crystal malts, caramel, grapefruit, pinecone and brown sugar. Taste is sweet rich malts with nice liquor snap. The caramels and dark crystal malts.the deeps sugar meets the well balanced hops that are grapefruit, passionfruit and lemon grass . Appearance is a lightly hazed amber body with a thin pearl head that retains fairly well.

Spicy, sweet, dark, and malty. Dark carmel hues, a color that lives up to the name. A great beer to watch the game with. High abv keeps it from being a distance drinker, a pair is usually plenty. Very thick, almost syrupy. Like any barleywine, it’s sweet but not over powering. Great robust flavor. As a side note, the Lagunitas sucks batch of brown shugga is nothing like the original. Also, stock up when you find it, Brown shugga is seasonal: winter.

Bottled. Pours clear honey golden color big frothy beige head. Aroma is toffee, sticky sweet plums, citrus, very prominent dankness, orange, grapefruit. Flavor is more malty in a really nice way. Sweet toffee, caramel, some raisins, brown sugar, sort of candied figs, sweet candy flavor, citrus backbone, bitter finish. Excellent malty Barleywine that leaves a very nice hop finish. So fantastic there. It’s a big beer but a good one that never feels too boozy.

Bottle@Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear deep amber color, long lasting beige head, wide bands of lace. Taste is big sweet caramel malt that grows a lot through the palate, adding hops in the finish that are just enough for balance. Heavy on the malt side, but otherwise, exceptional.

I sampled this about a year ago, but am sampling the Indian Brown Ale right now by Dogfish and it reminds me a lot like this beer, except not as hoppy and bitter. Brown Shugga has the kick! It is on the heavier side. Sweet, yet hoppy. I don’t recall the exact color, as I drank it out of a cup on a camping trip, but I know it was on brown-amber side. Was ok to try, but didn’t work well enough for me to fall in love with.
