An aborted batch of their Old Gnarleywine ended up tasting nearly as good as that they were hoping for, so they bottled it. God bless capitalism. OG 1.100 IBU 51.1

Bottled. A deep red beer with a medium sized orange head. The aroma is lovely grassy combined with notes of grapefruit, hops, and some caramel, as well as just the faintest hint of alcohol - a very inviting aroma. The flavor is very sweet - a bit too sweet for my liking, with strong notes of caramel, hops, grapefruit, grass, pine needles, roasted malt, and alcohol, leading to a very bitter end with the hops, grapefruit and alcohol lingering, the bitterness finaly turns dry. The body is thick. Just a bit too aggresive in sweetness and alcohol for my, but still nice.

(Bottle 65 cl) Courtesy of sk8viking. Clear, amber golden with an off-white head. Sweetish aroma of caramel and overripe fruit. Full in body with sweet accents of caramel - somewhat medicinal. The finish is dry. 060407

Bottled. Redish amber. Rich grapefruity hop aroma. Sweet and malty with clean, hard mouthfeel. The finish is sharp and resiny. Too raw and unbalanced to impress. All this apart, it is still a good beer, but I expect more of a barley wine than hops.

27th July 2008. Made with brown cane sugar. Tastes exactly like it was brewed! A hoppy barleywine with a healthy dose of brown sugar counteracting the hoppy bitterness. Never cloying or overly sweet.

Hazy dark amber color, with a big creamy head. It has a perfumy and spicy (vanilla) hop aroma, sweet and malty, inviting. It has a powerful body, with a good malt and caramel flavor; compared to other American Barley Wines, this one has the alcohol that wins over the hop; anyway, it’s well bitter and the alcohol is not too much. It has a balanced final with caramel. Very good, solid, straighforward.

Bottle, 12oz. A clear, dark golden beer with a beige head. Alcohol notes, beef stock, malt, sugars and hops in the aroma. Big and pleasant. The same words can be used for the flavor, it really is a big, tasteful and pleasant beer. Full-bodied and warming, with sweetness, maltyness, caramel and a lovely hop profile giving a delicate bitterness. Bitter finish with alcohol and sweetness. Really loved this one, tasteful and big. Far from quenching, but delicious. (090116)
