COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An aborted batch of their Old Gnarleywine ended up tasting nearly as good as that they were hoping for, so they bottled it. God bless capitalism. OG 1.100 IBU 51.1

On draught at Roscoe’s. 2012 vintage. Golden amber color. Intense citrus hop aroma. Sweet, citrusy hop flavor. Well balanced. Finishes with a nice hop kick, not bitter.

Poured from a 12 oz. Aroma is slightly floral. Flavor is somewhat sweet and hoppy. It has a resinous, biscuit flavor...but not overwhelming with brown sugar. Definitely has a sweet aftertaste. Not bad!

Bottle. Almost clear. Dark amber. Nose of resin, caramel, cheese, alcohol. Taste is cough syrup, caramel, licorice, scorched sugar. Mouthfeel has a bite up front, spritzy in the middle, smooth-ish warm finish. Overall this is a pretty nice tasting f-up.

Bottle 12/15/14. Pours a translucent amber with a fluffy, white-beige head. Aroma is sweet, brown sugar, grass, cereal, spicy, floral, caramel. Taste is rich, bittersweet, floral, herbal, brown sugar, burnt caramel, cereal, grass, alcohol; finish is long burnt caramel, roast malt, and fruit rind. Dense lacing throughout. Full-bodied, chewy. Medium-low carbonation. Fairly intense but pretty darn good.

Fantastic Beer. Finishes a bit sticky for my liking, although hardly a fault, as the name suggests it's sweet.

On tap at Lagunitas Chicago taproom. Pours plum brown. Flavor is malty molasses, but with a moderately crisp and medium mouthfeel and with a crisp, slightly bitter finish. ABV can be felt. Slightly oily.

How come you taste so good? For me, Brown Shugga reinforced a lesson I’ve been too stubborn to learn: I’m past the point where I can treat these types of beers like session ales. After sipping this ale, I was ready to settle down for some quality hibernation. Fortunately, I was conscious enough to make some mental notes. This brew has a sexy copper-brown color and tends to create a LOT of lacing on the glass. The smells were pretty damn enticing - toffee, barley, booze, and woodsy hops. Honest to goodness, the brew tastes like brown sugar. Resinous hops cut through the candy sweetness and help to rinse some of the syrupy stickiness from the palate. The alcohol heat is splendid. It’s safe to say that this ale would be an excellent "before-bed beer" on a chilly evening.

12oz bottler poured into a shaker. The aroma contains biscuits, citrus zest, roasty malt, and toffee. Oily and clear, the caramel-red colored beer is topped by a soapy white head, retaining a medium ring, good surface, and thick lace. The taste is highly bitter with a medium high, complimentary sweet. The thick, slick beer has a soft pillowy carbonation, and a medium full body. Flavors of bread, citrus, resin/wax, and caramel come through, with a touch of licorice at finish. Near the backend of the finish cloying malty and grain notes appear which are joined by caramel, a slight cough drop, and a bitter waxy aftertaste that lingers.
