Didnít know this was a barley wine before tasting it. Not a huge fan of the style. First sip I was why would they make a sweet IPA and the realized its a barley wine. If youíre into this style it wasnít bad.

red orange gold. lots of foam. Aroma metallic brown sugar, grassy hops. Tastes big caramel malt, bready, sturdy bitter. lighter in body that the intense flavor would suggest. great balance. Lagunitas hits their stride with this one.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a chestnut color. Good two finger off white head. Rocky retention. Some okay lacing.
Aroma is like spent cooking oil. Very malty and sweet.
Taste is like burnt brown sugar, burnt caramel. I taste the alcohol very much. Itís certainly a winter brew, it does seem like it would be warming. Eh, Iím unfamiliar with the style.
Mouthfeel is full. Itís heavy, itís not at all sessionable.
Overall, Iím not at all familiar with the style. Itís okay. Not your neighborís beer. If your go to is Bud Light, you WILL NOT like this. This is worth a try, but I donít know that I would commit to a six pack.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark amber with orange rim, off-white head that leaves some lacing.
Nose is grapefruit, candi sugar, basement dankness and caramel, though mostly subdied. Not really a barleywine, but achieves the West Coast substitute for "balance" by throwing in more of everything including malt. Sweetness does not mute the usual hop excess, but envelopes it.
Smooth, medium body and carbonation, and the ABV of just under 10 percent is sneaky rather than overpowering.
Overall, a decent brew for a cold evening, provided your session is short.

Bottle to shaker glass, pours clear amber. Two finger off white head, nice lacing and retention. Aroma of caramel and funk. Taste is SWEET, the hops are discernible but the sugars dominate the flavor profile. Slightly sour. Full bodied, appropriate carbonation, sticky mouth feel. Finishes sweet. Tasting notes of caramel, Belgian candy sugar, alcohol, over ripe stone fruits and herbs. Itís OK but too sweet for me.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from bottle into wet snifter in a rush because I have to be somewhere 5 minutes ago. Tastes like a DIPA with a shot of brown sugar liquor dumped in it. Warming yet bright, not a chugginí beer but more drinkable than a sipper like most barleys. Good for cool/cold nights and meat...or queso. Iím thinking late college football season through most of college basketball season. Rolling Stones comes to mind as a music pairing.

2014 and 2015 on tap at shamrock. Amber brown with white head, 2015 with better retention and lace. Also the 2015 appears to be a bit clearer. 2014 is a bit dryer and less fruity compared to the 2015. Overall its a dry strong brown ale with some candied red fruit character.
