Jokes (1449), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 2, 2006 Clear amber with a fluffy, beige head. Subtle nose of sweet caramel, brown sugar, light orange, raisins, whole grains, maybe some rye-ish spiciness, oily nuts, molasses and even some light marshmallow. The body is big and slick with an almost sticky, oily texture and very little carbonation. The flavor definitely shows off the malts and is extremely sweet. I wonder about the calories in this bad body because of all the residual sugars that never got fermented. There is some grapefruity-type hop bitterness near the finish, but it can’t counteract the intense sweetness. The best aspect of this beer is the how well they’ve hidden the 10% ABV, at least to my senses. The sweet, malty Barley Wine is nice, especially in the US, where we continue to expect massive hopbombs. That said, this is not going to compete for space in my fridge on a regular basis.
jtw (909), farmington, Michigan, USA Aug 17, 2008 12 oz twist-off stubby bottle, pours a coppery amber, and has a unique sweet aroma, accented by salty and bitter notes - immature green hops flavor, hops bitterness is present but not seamless. medium-bodied, particularly for a barley wine, and surprisingly light on the finish. (perhaps it’s just drier than the aroma and flavor would imply?) good beer, but unrefined as a barley wine. HughConway (259), USA Aug 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours amber. Taste is sweet, body is sweet, alcohol is very well hidden. High class malt liquor. aoa56 (17), zeeland, Michigan, USA Aug 10, 2008 Pours dark amber with almost no head. Smelled like brown sugar, and tastes the same. Very smooth. sleepylopes (277), New York, USA Aug 3, 2008 Better thefirst time, in bombers, better in 6 packs. On tap it is much the same butwiht a slight soapyness. Still strong and nice with abitter sweet profile. Will take an other look next time I have a bottle. Beerman6686 (654), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 31, 2008 Poured a cloudy brown color with an off white head. Aroma was very sweet and malty, mainly the brown sugga i guess. Flavor was much the same, actually tasted like brown sugar, hardly any bitterness to be found.
