3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tap. Catskill Mountain Pizza. Clear brown color. Medium carbonation and lively. Thin off-white head. Nose was very estery, with some bready malts. Very hoppy flavor and very bitter. Had no idea this was a barley wine. Was very sweet and sugary and its name is well put as it reminded me of brown sugar flavors. Was served in shaker like other beers. Good selection but clearly the server didn’t know what they were serving (told me it was a brown ale). Only found out later it was 9% abv - wow.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a half finger of head on a clear straw colored body.
The aroma has a mild grass and floral smell, with some lemon in the background.
The taste is bursting with flavors: lemon, grapefruit, brown sugar, strong caramel and anise. Great..
The texture is crisper.
Almost too drinkable for the high ABV.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
"this looks, tastes, and drinks more like a spiced ipa than an american barleywine. it’s a pretty good beer for hopheads...fragrant, bitter, with a...you gotit, brown sugar finish. pretty good, but almost lost amidst all the holiday brews out there. hadn’t had this since 08 - 2010 batch at 9.99%. sweeter...bigger bodied more like a BW. score holds about the same, maybe a 3.7. this was an aborted batch of ganrlywine? just as good imo. 2012 really hits the spot even though the head guy is the Ozzie Guillen of craft beer."

Transfer from BA review on 12-2-13-
Poured from bottle into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a clear amber color with some hints of ruby red seen shining through. Upon pouring there is a nice one finger of a thick, off white head. The head has a fantastic level of retention, hanging on for quite some time, but eventually fading to leave a bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is very sweet with lots of brown sugar and caramel and some big fruit aromas as well. The fruit smells are a mix of light fruit as well as a bit of some darker fruit aromas. The lighter aromas are biggest of a tropical smells with some apple and apricot mixing in, while the darker fruit aromas are mainly a mix of cherry and plum. A hint of a biscuit smell rounds out the aroma, producing an overall sugary and fruity nose to the beer.
Taste – The taste is rather surprising in light of the nose, as it contains a much maltier, slightly less sweet, and more hopped flavor the smells let on. The taste begins with a rather big malty flavor of a bready and doughty nature. There is a good level of sweetness right from the start as well with lots of tropical fruit flavors of tangerine, mango, and papaya as well as tons of caramel flavors. As the taste advances, the tropical fruit flavors lose some potency, being replaced by flavors of brown sugar and a bit of a cherry flavor. As the taste moved on from the middle, some grapefruit and grassy hop tastes come to the tongue. These flavors grow slightly more intense to the end of the taste, where the mix of flavors ends up leaving a moderately hopped, rather fruity and sugary, thick malty flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. A slightly lower carbonation may have been a little better for the big malt and sweeter flavors of the brew, but the thicker feel is very nice for highlighting the hop flavors mixed with the big malty and sweet flavors, really producing a rather nicely blended flavor.
Overall – A good malty and sweet brew with a decent level of hop and a great drinkability even at 9.9 % abv. A rather nice, and easy drinking big brew.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
330 ml bottle from czar, thanks mate. Pours an orange-tinted brownish amber with some flakes and a resilient white head. Aroma is sweet and metallic. Flavor is sweet, caramel. Finish is herbal - very bitter. A tad bit boozey, and some irritating metallic quality to it. Full bodied. Felt unbalanced and lacking in complexity.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from 45d bottle into a tulip. Deep amber color with a foamy but fast eroding head. Leaves a ring and laces on the way down.
Aromas are sweet and boozy with molasses, caramelized sugar with hints of hops lurking.
Big, bold flavor coats the palate and the bitterness lingers behind the sweetness for just the right length of time.
This beers says to light a fire and sit on the bear skin rug.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured a rich, deep amber with a quarter inch cream head. Aroma heavy with fruit and alcohol. A little thick on the tongue, but what a flavor! The combination of fruits, sugars, and biting hops played very well together. Definitely a long sipper but well worth it.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from bottle. Pours a orange-amber color with two finger slightly off-white head. Aromas - a touch of citrus and pine from the hops and sweetness from the brown sugar. Sweetness is more forward than the hops. Taste - lots of caramel, then resiny bitter hops, and alcohol. The mouthfeel is big as you might expect and a touch oily. Carbonation level is lively. Finish is medium to medium long. This is one big beer.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
A solid beer from a great brewery! One of the first breweries that I followed when I was introduced to craft beer. This is a staple from their brewery.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at home from backlog notes. Pours a reddish amber color with a small off white/yellowish head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel malts, molasses, brown sugar, some golden raisins, with resiny hops to the finish. The bitterness helps to balance the sweetness.
