17thfloor (649), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 13, 2008 Pours deep reddish/orange/amber with a wonderful fluffy off-white froth. Sweet piney and citrus hop aroma overtop of a sweet cinnamon like maltiness. Sweet mellow malty flavor with a dark slightly burnt brown sugar finish. Just enough hop bite to balance it out. A little bit plasticy and very straight forward. Perfect smooth fluffy finely carbonated body, slightly thin. Easy drinking, not a sipping barley wine at all, more of an American Strong Ale. The real weak point is the short finish. 10%...no way. A pleasant surprise; Lagunitas... please abort more beers...you might be a better brewer that way!
msante79 (232), Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours amber with small off-white head. Aroma is of sweet malt, brown sugar and a little booze. Flavor is very sweet with brown sugar and malt. Does have the big hop flavors like most american barley wines which nice every once in a while. Hides alcohol well and is balanced enough you could have more than one. Suds_McDuff (1013), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston,TX, Texas, USA Aug 23, 2008 pours from a 12 ounce bottle .. lets go... very silky and mellow beer for having a 9.9% backbone .. tasty and abv very well hidden ... warms u up nicely .. van is the man, sneijder too (2) ... great flavours in this one- brown sugar, rum, figs, plums ... same aroma too ... a very drinkable barleywine! jtw (911), farmington, Michigan, USA Aug 17, 2008 12 oz twist-off stubby bottle, pours a coppery amber, and has a unique sweet aroma, accented by salty and bitter notes - immature green hops flavor, hops bitterness is present but not seamless. medium-bodied, particularly for a barley wine, and surprisingly light on the finish. (perhaps it’s just drier than the aroma and flavor would imply?) good beer, but unrefined as a barley wine. HughConway (259), USA Aug 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours amber. Taste is sweet, body is sweet, alcohol is very well hidden. High class malt liquor. aoa56 (18), zeeland, Michigan, USA Aug 10, 2008 Pours dark amber with almost no head. Smelled like brown sugar, and tastes the same. Very smooth.
