Hoptagon (59), Arlington, Virginia, USA Feb 7, 2008 12oz. bottle. Poured down the middle of the snifter it has a lacy off white head and a deep ruby color. Nose is dry, slightly fruity and has a noticeable alcohol presence. Mouthfeel is malty, with a touch of dark fruit and subtle sugar cane flavor. Not nearly as sweet as its moniker would lead you to believe. The 9.9% is very well hidden as it goes down behind the malt backbone and bittering hops, but is still present in the nose. Solid offering from Lagunitas, highly quaffable and available in sixers.
msante79 (232), Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours amber with small off-white head. Aroma is of sweet malt, brown sugar and a little booze. Flavor is very sweet with brown sugar and malt. Does have the big hop flavors like most american barley wines which nice every once in a while. Hides alcohol well and is balanced enough you could have more than one. Suds_McDuff (1013), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston,TX, Texas, USA Aug 23, 2008 pours from a 12 ounce bottle .. lets go... very silky and mellow beer for having a 9.9% backbone .. tasty and abv very well hidden ... warms u up nicely .. van is the man, sneijder too (2) ... great flavours in this one- brown sugar, rum, figs, plums ... same aroma too ... a very drinkable barleywine! jtw (911), farmington, Michigan, USA Aug 17, 2008 12 oz twist-off stubby bottle, pours a coppery amber, and has a unique sweet aroma, accented by salty and bitter notes - immature green hops flavor, hops bitterness is present but not seamless. medium-bodied, particularly for a barley wine, and surprisingly light on the finish. (perhaps it’s just drier than the aroma and flavor would imply?) good beer, but unrefined as a barley wine. HughConway (259), USA Aug 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours amber. Taste is sweet, body is sweet, alcohol is very well hidden. High class malt liquor. aoa56 (18), zeeland, Michigan, USA Aug 10, 2008 Pours dark amber with almost no head. Smelled like brown sugar, and tastes the same. Very smooth.
