4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Transfer from BA review on 4-8-13
Poured from bottle into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a nearly pitch black color with a small tan colored head. The head fades quite quickly leaving a good level of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – Coffee and chocolate mixed with a good caramel sweetness are the heaviest and the majority of the aroma on this one. Mixed with these smalls however are some other aromas of a light vanilla, some smells of an oaky nature as well as a light boozy smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a big dose of creamy and smooth chocolate and coffee. Some sweeter flavors of vanilla and caramel are present upfront and are soon met with some flavors of a more milky and creamy nature bringing a more milk chocolate mocha flavor to the brew. Soon a little bit of bitterness enters the taste as some more roasted malt and coffee flavors come to the tongue. Other more bitter flavors of an earthy hop taste come to the tongue more toward the end of the taste. This mixed with a more oaky taste ends up leaving a roasty cappuccino taste to the tongue.
Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is big and robust with a nice thick creaminess which matched the nice dark roasted malt and sweeter cappuccino flavor of the brew very well. This mixed with the lighter carbonation make for a fantastic sipper.
Overall – Quite delicious. A big sweet coffee/cappuccino stout with a nice smooth flavor profile and feel. Give it a chance if you can.

Bottle. Strong coffee and cappuccino aroma. Very smooth taste with some fantastic mocha flavors. Easy drinking and great post-dinner with some dessert. The alcohol level in this is not apparent. Excellent overall.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from backlog.
Very dark brown with a beige head.
Aroma: light sour, used coffee grounds, green chili (something I can often find in coffee beers).
Taste: coffee beans, creamy, licorice, green chili, milk chocolate.
I was disappointed, but I’d try another bottle if I saw it.

Thin dark pour with a good frothy head. Smells like coffee. Not much else can be picked up over the coffee aroma. So good. Dark roasted coffee taste with a good amount of sweet mocha flavor. Thumbs up!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black. Aroma and taste are chocolate and coffee. Starts sweet and has a lightly bitter finish. Little lighter bodied than most imperial stouts.

On tap. Pours pitch black with large tan head. Aroma is coffee and maltiness. Flavor is big roasted coffee with tons of dark chocolate. Absolutely fantastic. Nice bitter finish. And this beer also manages to not be overly syrupy. Well done.

During my last beer session, it just so happened that Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout was one of two coffee-infused dark beers with a dog on the label (the other was Laughing Dog’s Anubis). What are the odds of that? Interestingly, I liked both beers about the same. The incorporation of Cappuccino is a phenomenal idea. It brings out the more reserved sweetness from the toasted malt and brings out the taste of vanilla and cream. That said, I wanted more of that Cappuccino flavor than this Imperial Stout provided. A bigger aroma would help, also. I was still quite satisfied with Cappuccino Stout. The flavor was incredibly smooth and the alcohol was almost completely hidden. That’s not always something you can say about this type of ale.

A- Coffee, cocoa, roasty.
A- Black color, very dark liquid, tan head.
T- Coffee, cocoa, roasty, slightly bitter, slightly malty, robust.
P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, roasty finish.
O- I was planning on getting a nice rich complex cappuccino flavor from this beer, and while it was good, it seemed pretty weak. Needed a bit more coffee, but all in all, not a bad beer.
