Pours a nice dark brown with a small tan head. Not as thick as I would have expected. Aroma is that of muted coffee and malt. The coffee comes through more in the taste. Very mellow...easy to drink. Strykzone (1459), Wood River, Illinois, USA Feb 24, 2007 A classic looking stout. It is very dark with reddish highlights. Plenty of dark tan head hangs around with nice lacing. Aroma is muted. Flavor is quite nice with lots of roastiness and more sweetness than expected. Coffee flavor is noticeable and a bitter after taste lingers for a while. Nice balance to this beer and everything about it says quality ingredients. Sregnar35 (729), Rotterdam, New York, USA Feb 24, 2007 Excellent stuff. Poured brown black with a nice nutty head. Aroma was not too strong ,but pleasant and roasty. Flavor was a good bite of bitter burnt coffee, and very sweet malt. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Feb 23, 2007 Updated: Feb 24, 2007Pours dark dark brown with a cream colored head, thinning quickly. The nose is creamy and subdued. Obviously sweet with malt and some coffee notes. Not amazingly strong, but rather pleasant. The mouthfeel is silky smooth. Subtled carbonation and a nice creaminess. The flavors are top notch in this here brew. Big robust malt sweetness, rare to this extent in a stout, or nearly any non IIPA or barleywine beer. Still, it’s entirely balanced by some rather influential coffee, (dare I say it, cappuccino) notes. There’s a creamy bit of flavor in here and barely any hops, but it’s certainly there subtly, as is some alcohol. The finish is very sweet, but not too big for throw off the balance. The finish has some subtle bitter roast and some chocolate to it, but it’s very clean despite a bit of lingering. A really nicely constructed stout, more of a sweet stout, I’d gladly buy more. As it warmed, the beer became more plain and less interesting, so I knocked off one point overall. Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Feb 21, 2007 Pours dark brown with a foamy tan head. Smells strongly of coffee which overwhelms everything else. Tastes of coffee with some alcohol thrown in. MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Feb 20, 2007 My Bottom Line:
This honest coffee-flavored stout expands into chocolate powder to then dry up into roasty dryness. A rich yet drinkable body offers as much tastebud satisfaction as nourishment.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam straddles the brown-tinged black.
-Some featureless hop bitterness supports the malty overseers.
-Coffee confidently returns in the finish.
