hillfiiiiire (211), Atoka, Tennessee, USA Apr 23, 2008 Pours black with a tan head that mostly persists. The aroma is espresso coffee with roasted chocolate malts. The flavor follows through strongly with that coffee. Definitely like drinking a chilled cup of coffee, but balanced very nicely with the malts. Not much hop presence as the IBU’s would imply. This is a coffee beer balanced rather well. It finishes nice and light, which is kind of surprising but in a good way. Really enjoyable beer.
highibus (270), Vail, Arizona, USA Oct 11, 2008 a little light on the color for a stout. but a decent tan head. nice coffee aroma nd flvor. good flavor but a little light. joeymacaroni (134), West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 10, 2008 Bomber from State Line. Pours dark toffee brown. Thin, quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma of ovaltine and cappucino. Actually, aroma is very similar to the new Russian Monster Java. Also kinda like homemade Kahlua. Underlyingly, like arabian coffee, sweet and bean-y. Tons of choclate of different types. Light caramel, toffee, a tiny bit of a bite. Flavor is deep. Lots of cappucino, duh, but also a little licorice, pepper, chocolate, kinda bittersweet. Aftertaste is like a mocha-flavored malted milkshake with a distinct alcohol burn at the back of the throat. Beautiful. No carbonation, thick, oily, and viscous. Awesome beer, especially at the price! Hooray Lagunitas! lemasney (300), Trenton, New Jersey, USA Oct 8, 2008 Style and Glass: Stout, english pint

Purchased at: Super Saver Pennington for $4.99?
Aroma: nice, soft, coffee, chemical, spice. 8 out of 10.
Visuals: okay package, brown, translucent, little tan head, sticky lace. 4 out of 5.
Taste: medium balance, medium malt, medium hops, low strength, some craft. 6 out of 10.
Palate: medium quality, smooth texture, short finish. 2 out of 5.
Overall: More like coffee than stout, would not repeat, not a favorite, low value, low craft for lagunitas. 15 out of 20. bconley (40), Fern Park, Florida, USA Oct 7, 2008 Right up my alley. Pours dark and beautiful brown. Tastes very sweet, with hints of toffee thats not completely overshadowed by the awesome flavor of the coffee. I little thinner than I expected..but I like....should be made year-round
drjay44 (164), Colorado, USA Oct 4, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Pours a mocha colored head, with minimal retention and some lacing over a reddish brown body.... nose of cocoa, mild coffee, bit of yeast....tastes initially of malt sweetness, evolving to toffee, then roasted flavors, and a bitter finish, that is partially hops and partially old coffee. Mouth feel is pleasant, but the finishing flavors are off putting.
I am coming to the opinion that coffee flavors should come from the roasting of the malts and not the bean.
