3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Clear dark amber appearance, good head formation. Strong caramel malt aroma, berry fruitiness and mildly spiced hoppiness. Medium to full bodied palate but a fairly easy drinker for the style. Plenty of sugarry sweetness, blackcherry and cranberry fruitiness, mild roasted chocolate, intense citric bitterness towards the end that probably would be more emphatic were it not subdued by all that sugar. Some Belgian influences, some brown ale influences, plenty going on, tastey stuff.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Something special for #200...
Bottled. Pours a dark amber color with a sizable, almost frothy ivory colored head. Smells malty, with notes of dark fruits. Almost barley wine-ish in flavor. Cherries and fruit with hints of chocolate. Strange (but good) hop bitterness in the finish along with a bit of warmth. I would recommend trying a bottle!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22oz bottle. Dark red color. Medium sized white foamy head, long lasting strong lacing. Aroma is fruity and sweet, touch of chocolate and some hop aroma that seems to dissipate rather quickly. For some reason I feel like I should be drinking and reviewing this beer wearing a smoking jacket and sunglass with a warm 45 by my side. I would have some vials of ether nearby but this swarm of bat came by and stole them all. A medium to full bodied American Strong Ale. Malts are fruity and sweet with some chocolate and cherry flavors. A medium bitter hoppiness that’s kind of hard to define, sort of grapefruity and earthy but… A big bold beer, but the flavors are not quite an assault to the taste buds. Very smooth taste. Nice beer. As usual an interesting and hard to analyze beer from Lagunitas. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. I’m feeling a little lightheaded, maybe someone else should finish this rating.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The ’commercial description’ reads SG of 1075 but the bottle reads 8.5%ABV. I am pretty sure that is impossible, especially considering the amount of residual sweetness in this one, but who am I. The color is deep, dark amber with a thin, but sustained, cream colored head. Aroma of dark, roasted caramel; juicy with some dark cherry fruit. Flavor is highly concentrated, burnt caramel and big but not definitive hop flavor. Almost an ESB on ’roids. Great balance of strong flavors with a syrupy sweetness sliding in underneath letting you know this is a hefty beer. Black cherry fruitiness (reminiscent of Iron Duke from Wellington County) complements the malt flavors. I would probably desribe this as an American strong ale.
