COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Special Ale is, in reality, a reconstructed exhumation of the very first ale that we ever brewed way, way back, in 1993. Brewed with a big head, a muscular malty thorax, a silky texture & all strung together with a hoppy sweet nerve sack... yum.

Caramel hop explosion - way darker in color and roastier in flavor than expected - tastes a little like a hoppy scotch ale. The hop flavor reminds me of Sumpiní Sumpiní with its oranginess. Nice, different than expected, pretty intense, better than a scotch ale with a little bit of a hint of one.

Bottle from sixpack. I waited for the last one to rate it. Brilliant copper red hues give way to a mild aroma of hops and malts. Hits the palate with a crisp dry hoppy goodness. I get more hops than malts, but I like that. I also like the nice bitter finish and aftertast that lingers for a long time. I will buy this again and often, so long as itís available.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2005 Pours a nice transparent copper with a nice-sized, just off-white head. Smells big and appetizing, like a good amber ale with an amped-up body and flavor. Unfortunately, i was a bit let down by the taste. Body is thin. The only thing "imperial" about this brew feels like the extra alcohol content and an uninspired bitterness. I thought I would have loved a majorly hopped red, but there just seems to be something missing in the taste. The malt is simple and sweet and the hops have a real earth taste to them, but neither flavor seems extra special. Maybe thatís poor criteria for rating a brew, how "not special" it is. I did like this beer, itís nicely balanced and refreshing/drinkable. Seems like an average ESB with a higher alcohol kick.

Look: pours a dark copper. Off white head. Very clear. Smell: sweet caramel. Tropical fruit. Mango. Citrus. Pine. Taste: citrus. Grapefruit. Pine. Feel: slight dryness. Leaves a thick film on the mouth. Overall: good beer. Nice cross between a red beer and an IPA. Good American hop flavor. Love the sweet flavor from the malt. First Drank: home 9/17/14

Bomber poured into a snifter. Aroma is kinda muted... subtle caramel and crystal malts, pine and grapefruit hoppy and sweet yeast. Flavor is raisins, dates, grapefruit bitterness, sweet then finishes bitter and floral. Palate is super smooth. Really good red. Would taste in the 4s UF the aroma was bigger.

Pours a nice copper, sweet aroma. Good flavor, but it didnít quite have the full punch of Arrogant Bastard. Solid beer, I feel like it is bordering on great but doesnít quite get there.

Bottle poured into snifter. Great looking beer, copper burgundy color, surprisingly clear, and a nice ample marshmallowy head. Great aroma of malt, caramel, booze, and sprucey floral hops. Very nice, not mindblowing. Taste holds up to the nose. Resin, slighly floral hops dominate before a slightly sweet middle gives way to a bitter, sticky finish. Good overall, would like a little more malt in the taste. Good beer though at a good price. Lagunitaís rarely disappoints!

Dark amber color with a mellow hoppy aroma. We sat on this barrel for sometime, so I think it may have matured from the original product. Usually a more aggressive, fresh taste. Wonderfully balanced. Not too much malt on a 7.6.

Pours copper with a thin beige head. Has a pleasant aroma of fruits, caramel, vanilla and malts. Flavor and palate both were flat. Seems to be missing that smooth, creamy palate. Noticable flavors of malts, hop, citrus and pine.

Pours a dark orange red with about a finger head. Aroma is sweet with cherries and what seems to be a hint of brown sugar followed by mild hops. Taste is also on the sweet fruit side and mild hops. Can taste the malt in a postive way. Very smooth, a perfect fall beer. Light to medium body.
