COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Special Ale is, in reality, a reconstructed exhumation of the very first ale that we ever brewed way, way back, in 1993. Brewed with a big head, a muscular malty thorax, a silky texture & all strung together with a hoppy sweet nerve sack... yum.

Pours a mid copperish red. Big fresh, grassy hops aroma off the big pillowy head. The taste doesnít live up entirely to the big aroma, but itís a solid, hoppy flavor. Not as much of a grapefruit flavor as Iím accustomed to with these red IPAs.

A copper color with a moderate head. The aroma is very pronounced citrus and alcohol. I can smell it 6 inches away from the glass. The flavor is strawberry, grapefruit, orange peel. Very IIPAish to me. Its very hoppy yet malty it acheives excellent balance. I love it!

UPDATED: SEP 23, 2007 Re-rate 9/23/07: Draught at Charlieís Ale House, Wheaton, IL. Even better than I remember. Wonderful balance. A near perfect brew. Clean lines and glassware didnít hurt. As the 1st beer of the evening and with bevy of other options to choose from, I struggled with the decision to go with something else for the 2nd beer (which I did: Spaten Oktoberfest). Underrated. 8/2/06: Bottle. Some malt in the nose and some hop. Sweet, molassesy arona. Reddish amber body with an off-white head. Messy, sloppy lace. Creamy, with some hops. Well balanced. Excellent. Low alcohol for an "imperial" brew, but enough to provide some body. Well done. Ar 7, Ap 4, Fl 8, Pal 5, Ov 17

On tap at Collins Pub, Seattle. Russet colour with beige head. Rich red fruit and hop aroma. Lots of strawberry malt aroma, lots of grapefruit hop on finish. Lots of hop on aroma. Lovely richness. Great malt base to run the Impy hops over. Love it. Unsubtle but lovely.

Draft 1/2 pint at Falling Rock Taphouse. Bright freakiní red with a big poofy head. Brutal assault on the palate -- alcohol, hop oil, full-on blast of malt, more hop oil. Outstanding brew. (#3133, 10/10/2007)

Pours a deep amber with a medium copper & slightly greenish head. I might be imagining the green because the hop aroma is so powerful that it makes me think I’m looking into a brew kettle that just got its first dose of hops. The aroma is a very strong resinous pine and slight citrus. The mouthfeel and flavor are a little on the syrupy side. The hops are heavy and the they overpower the slight cherry grape malt . But the hops are good if a little too far forward. There is more perceived alcohol than is really there. It is a delicious beer that reminds me of Stone Double Bastard. I couldn’t finish off the 6 in one night.

APPEARANCE: Pours a clear copper color with a medium off-white head that has average retention. Lots of sticky lacing. AROMA: Powerful big earthy/citrusy hops, brown sugar, biscuit like malts. Hint of peach. TASTE: Rich sticky hops (grapefruit comes to mind) that is well balanced with caramel like sweet malts. You can also taste the alcohol. MOUTHFEEL: Full bodied creamy almost sticky mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. DRINKABILITY: Big flavor, yum! Very nice balance of bitter hops and sweet malts. This is a pretty rich beer so you canít drink too many of them. NOTES: BBCSD-0812-Corey

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2012 A big, gorgeous red ale. One of the best new beers Iíve had in a while. The red malt backbone is super-strong, but thereís still a classic lagunitas hop character here. I bought a case immediately after tasting it, and Iíll get this wherever I can find it. Like if Arrogant Bastard and Lagunitas IPA made sweet, sweet love. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Location/Date:Bottle on March 27th, 2012.

Appearance: Pours a medium dark red.
Aroma: Aroma is piney and floral hop, caramel malt.
Taste: Medium heavy bitterness, nice amount of caramel malt backbone.
Palate:Slick, low carbonation. Slightly sticky aftertaste that fades but lingers.

Summary: To me, the "imperial red" should be itís own category so I can make it my favorite. Lagunitas delivers heavily yet again on this one. They might be my favorite west coast brewery, and usually are priced well in stores here in the DC area.
