2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a brown red with a finger of lighter caramel foam and some nice grainy lace. Smells of rich malts and some herbal hops - atypical for Lagunitas’s style, but welcome nonetheless. I like it as a traditional red ale. Medium sweetness countered with bitterness and some herbal notes juxtaposed with a slight bitter orange peel flavor. A little more bitter than I’d like. Medium bodied with moderate on hi carb and a dry finish. Decent beer, but nothing outstanding.

fazit: rundum überzeugendes red ale. ausgewogen intensiv. probierenswert.

355 ml bottle, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.8%, OG 1072, IBU 54.2. Red (or reddish brown) colour, moderate off-white head. Pleasant fruity (berries, dark dried fruits) and malty aroma with some caramel notes. The flavour is distinctly malty, again with some caramel notes, without being overly sweet. Fruity and resinous hops with a firm bitterness in the finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Brilliant burnt deep umber hues of garnet and ruby with a voluptuous creamy head which slowly fades into a stubborn blanket of fluff and bubbles. Swirls bready and soft.
Piney and grapefruity hops are front and center with a sweet caramelized crunchy underbelly. Grapefruit slightly dominates the pine. Essence of vibrant greenery. Dew-dropped freshly mown grass. Sticky hop resins in the middle.
Sweet crunchy melba and candy apple skins along the sides. Grapefruit leads into sticky lemon peel in the back followed by parching thirst-inducing pith of two said fruits. Sticky pine trees and hop resins in the middle also leave my lips sticky. Quaff and repeat.
Not overly complex but big, bold, and bursting with aroma and flavor which is just the way I like my Imperial Reds/American Strong Ales. Even better, it was balanced, making for a pleasant session that ended sooner than I would have liked…but thankfully it was just one bottle out a whole 6pack so I had more to enjoy and enjoy I did.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The nose is a tropical fruit hop bomb with rich, malts beneath. The taste is aggressively tropical-hoppy at first, but has a sweeter, maltier finish than an IPA would have. The mouthfeel is fairly heavy and well-carbonated. Overall, this is a solid hoppy red. Very, very tasty!

Bottle, shared with Bergen Beer Geek Tasting Crew. Deep amber body, small off-white head. Aroma is pine, licorice, melon, peaches, hints of alcohol and red berries. Taste is licorice, pine, grass, alcohol and hints of herbs. Mellow and pleasant. Full body, medium to soft carbonation. A pretty decent ASA.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Old school beer here, gotta love shit that came out in the mid 90s. Pours a hazy amber with 1-2 inched of tan head. Tasting notes were heavy bitter hopping, citrus, flower, grass, light malt. Perfect amount of carbonation for the style. Finishes nicely with slight warming in the gut. Solid beer from Lagunitas.

I admit that I am biased against reds, as I have never had one that I enjoyed. I approached this with an open mind. The pour was clear and attractive, but the palate seemed to fade quickly in my bottles. The aroma was hoppy, but not distinctive. I would recommend this beer to anyone who enjoys this style.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aged near one year. Pours red copper with off white lasting fizz. The aroma is so similar to much of lagunitas’s line, see lightly caramel grains and a light citrus earthy floral hop. The taste is once again similar with a more malty lean to this one. Slight grapefruit pear and floral hops. Very smooth and easy to drink. Goes down quickly. Almost a drying finish but slick enough to keep the grainy sugars around to outlast the hop flavors. Really nice overall, they know how to make a smooth hoppy brew.
