COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Special Ale is, in reality, a reconstructed exhumation of the very first ale that we ever brewed way, way back, in 1993. Brewed with a big head, a muscular malty thorax, a silky texture & all strung together with a hoppy sweet nerve sack... yum.

bottle. Deep amber with one finger head. Amber with all the hops you’d expect from Lagunitas. Mighty fine

A- Pours a clear amber hue with a nice, 1.5 finger, off white head that leaves tons of lacing on the way down. S- Deep and malty, notes of caramel with a hint of piney hops. T- Starts off very malty, light fruits and finishes with an assertive piney hop presence. M- Thick with a good amount of carbonation. D- There’s not a ton going on here and it really plays to this beers advantage. It does a few things and does them really well.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Ruddy reddish brown pour with HUGE off white head that took several minutes to dissipate. Big chewy juicy hoppy nose with a slightly lesser but still very powerful bready caramel malt aroma. From the first sip, this is a classic example of a beer that is nice and fun in the beginning and becomes a chore by the end. Flavors are nice, but too much overall, and the balance is off which by the time that this ended was cloying and annoying. Still a nice one, but next time, I’ll limit it to one 12oz bottle.

Bottled 25JAN12 Pours a brown red with a finger of lighter caramel foam and some nice grainy lace. Smells of rich malts and some herbal hops - atypical for Lagunitas’s style, but welcome nonetheless. I like it as a traditional red ale. Medium sweetness countered with bitterness and some herbal notes juxtaposed with a slight bitter orange peel flavor. A little more bitter than I’d like. Medium bodied with moderate on hi carb and a dry finish. Decent beer, but nothing outstanding. Serving type: bottle 03-26-2012

10,12,11,11,13,11 - 11,15 - 18/

355 ml bottle, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.8%, OG 1072, IBU 54.2. Red (or reddish brown) colour, moderate off-white head. Pleasant fruity (berries, dark dried fruits) and malty aroma with some caramel notes. The flavour is distinctly malty, again with some caramel notes, without being overly sweet. Fruity and resinous hops with a firm bitterness in the finish.

Appearance: Brilliant burnt deep umber hues of garnet and ruby with a voluptuous creamy head which slowly fades into a stubborn blanket of fluff and bubbles. Swirls bready and soft.
Nose: Piney and grapefruity hops are front and center with a sweet caramelized crunchy underbelly. Grapefruit slightly dominates the pine. Essence of vibrant greenery. Dew-dropped freshly mown grass. Sticky hop resins in the middle.
Palate: Sweet crunchy melba and candy apple skins along the sides. Grapefruit leads into sticky lemon peel in the back followed by parching thirst-inducing pith of two said fruits. Sticky pine trees and hop resins in the middle also leave my lips sticky. Quaff and repeat.
Final Thoughts: Not overly complex but big, bold, and bursting with aroma and flavor which is just the way I like my Imperial Reds/American Strong Ales. Even better, it was balanced, making for a pleasant session that ended sooner than I would have liked…but thankfully it was just one bottle out a whole 6pack so I had more to enjoy and enjoy I did.

The nose is a tropical fruit hop bomb with rich, malts beneath. The taste is aggressively tropical-hoppy at first, but has a sweeter, maltier finish than an IPA would have. The mouthfeel is fairly heavy and well-carbonated. Overall, this is a solid hoppy red. Very, very tasty!

Bottle, shared with Bergen Beer Geek Tasting Crew. Deep amber body, small off-white head. Aroma is pine, licorice, melon, peaches, hints of alcohol and red berries. Taste is licorice, pine, grass, alcohol and hints of herbs. Mellow and pleasant. Full body, medium to soft carbonation. A pretty decent ASA.
