Commercial Description:
This Special Ale is, in reality, a reconstructed exhumation of the very first ale that we ever brewed way, way back, in 1993. Brewed with a big head, a muscular malty thorax, a silky texture & all strung together with a hoppy sweet nerve sack... yum. O.G. 1.072 84.2 IBU

I really like this brew. It goes down so nice with Mexican. Good fruit on the nose, nice malt with terrific bitter hop finish. Great color too.

2007 Bottle - Pours amber brown with a small off white head, aroma is candy malt...sticky flavour, finishes cleaner and pine resiny, I do like the alcohol content...seems less than other Lagunitas labels, but what I don’t like is how it tastes just like 4 of their other beers...malt bomb/hop bomb can only go so far....

12oz bottle. Pour is clear brownish red with a big white head that hangs around for awhile. Smell is mostly hops with notes of caramel malts. Taste is sweet malts with some pine hops. Decent lacing. A good brew that is a little heavy but still worth a drink.

i dont drink too many red ales. This one has a nice fruity nose. very pretty amber color. they went very liberal on the hops. the mouthfeel is nice and creamy. flavor is a little malty in the middle. mostly a big sweet hop nose, sweet malty (slightly slightly roasty) taste, and a clean bitter finish. feels kinda heavy, but I have no problem with that. This is a really nice beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear but deep red brown with a vigorous tan head the color of which reminds me of cotton candy spun from maple sugar. Ample hop aromas full of complex citrus and resin filled pine greet the nose, backed up by ample sweet malt. Good amount of lacing as the beer is consumed. Thick malty mouthfeel reminiscent of a good double IPA, but a bit sweeter. Finish again brings up IPA comparisons, but the bitterness is not as bracing.

12 oz bottle from Hyde Park Express (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark red mahogany brown with a one finger tan head. Some retention and lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, maple syrup, some hops, brown sugar. Not much head retentin but some significant lacing. Flavor is both malty and hoppy with notes of oats, raisins, some hints of brandy and hops. Generally light to medium body with a slighty sweet, slightly bitter finish.

Stubby 12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Copper-amber color with a thick tan head. Lots of lacing. Aroma is mainly citrus hops, with a very tangy character, and caramel malt. Flavor is the same. Sweet and substantial malt base, orangey grapefruity hops, and a slight metallic note. Piney bitterness takes the edge off the sappy sweetness. Finish is a little dirty/sticky, body is a couple shades over medium.

12 oz. Clear red-copper with a lasting half-inch of foam. Crunchy soap rings of lace. Nice caramel-grapefruit and nut aroma. Flavor is a tad more bipolar and harsh than the aroma suggests: caramel apple that turns to tea leaf and berry, and eventually is completely finished by grapefruit, tongue depressor and nutty-resin. Still, overall a tasty brew. Near-medium body is a little too frothy for me, and very woody-dry on the finish.
