Elwood (667), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Aug 7, 2009 Serving: 12 oz. bottle.
Appearance: Nice amber-brown color with a foamy, light tan head. Lots of sticky lacing left behind.
Aroma: Pine hops, bready malt, and some caramel. A little lighter than expected.
Taste: Caramel malt, mostly pine hops but some floral notes as well, and some nuttiness. Quite nice!
Mouthfeel: Carbonation is medium and smooth. Full body and a sticky mouthfeel. Medium finish with a nice malt/hop balance.
Overall: This was a pretty impressive ale that is well put together and is worth trying.
Would I buy it again: Definitely. I wouldn’t mind having a few of these lying around the house. ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Aug 6, 2009 Pours a dark brown color with a small to medium sized creamy beige head. Nose is dark brown sugar and pine needles. Taste is about the same. Not really complex. Weaker mouthfeel that finishes very bitter yet sweet. Homebrew quality IMO. doublebock (196), USA Aug 6, 2009 Light brown hue with thin white head. Fresh and bold hops smack u in the face. River of pine hopiness overwhelms the flavor as well bonbright7 (173), Bellport, New York, USA Aug 5, 2009 This dark red and brown ale has a strong aroma of hops, but the first taste of this big beer reveals an interesting background. It has a smooth as carpet feel to it that ends with a kick of hop spices. It’s noted abv strength makes it less than likely that one would have more than two in any sitting. pressboxjoe (69), , New Jersey, USA Jul 29, 2009 Bottle from the Foodery in Philadelphia. Nice deep red color with robust off-white head. Strong aroma of hops and strawberries, little floral. Smooth, fruity, sweet and unusual. Possibly the most unexpectedly tasty beer I’ve had. RHeastings (380), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 19, 2009 Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a pub glass. The beer pours the expected deep amber color, with a nice and relatively long-lasting white head. A nose dominated by hops come through, with Simcoe and perhaps Cascade or Amarillo being especially evident. The palate is hop-forward, but maintains a nice back-end balance of caramel malt sweetness. Nicely done. MereLikesBeer (153), Royal Oak, Michigan, USA Jul 18, 2009 Shared a bottle of this with BeerBaron617. It poured an amber color - not quite red :) but it had a light tan/medium white head. It had a nice sweet and light fruit aroma. Taste, well it was quite good, it had a nice mouthfeel - probably in part from the light carbonation but it also was a nice consistency - not too thick but had some decent body. It tasted sweet - caramel maybe with a bit more malt, but it also had a good amount of hops. Very good. fidelis83 (709), Clinton, Iowa, USA Jul 14, 2009 Pours dark amber-copper with a thin, fluffy, off white head that has good retention. Aroma is citrus, floral, and a little pine over dark caramel and pretty nice toasty grain notes. Flavor is sweet caramel, sweet grain, some earthy notes, citrus and pine with an herbal/ dark fruit character coming out toward the finish. Palate is medium bodied with a slick, syrupy feel throughout and a decent carbonation. Definitely a good addition to their lineup, but they could stand to expand their flavor profile a little, and the palate leaves alot to be desired.
