This Special Ale is, in reality, a reconstructed exhumation of the very first ale that we ever brewed way, way back, in 1993. Brewed with a big head, a muscular malty thorax, a silky texture & all strung together with a hoppy sweet nerve sack... yum.

Aroma: Big time grapefruity hops!!! Appearance: Red with a nice white head which stayed for a while Flavor: Starts with a malt note which is very quickly replaced with the huge hoppy character. While the aroma is nice I am a little struck by what I can describe as "Resiny" which just wants to hang around Palate: For a medium body beer the hoppy flavors dominate Overall: A treat if you like hoppy beers but if you are looking for a red ale with malts... may be disappointed

Bottle: Red pour with a big white head. Aroma was citrusy, probably grapefruit. Flavor had a pale malt undertone, with the big hop character over top of it. Some pine, and citrus. Went down pretty easy, but I love me some hops.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2006 Deep reddish amber color, with a brilliantly clear, rich red color when held up to the light. The head is quite large, four-fingers thick, frothy and a lightly amber-tinged tan color, which even leaves a bit of lacing as I work my way through my glass. The aroma is satisfyingly hoppy with a raw, herbal hop edge that is backed by a solid sticky citrus note that reminds me of grapefruit. The aroma is just so resinous, seriously evoking some thoughts of it’s near, green budded cousin. Underneath the hop aromatics is a solid malt character which has notes of both toffee and lightly toasted biscuits.

The taste is lightly sweet up front, but it is really drowned out by the ample hop character that is found from beginning to end in this beer. A resinous hop character is immediately noticeable; raw and a bit aggressive this character is only amplified by the solid bitterness, which lingers on into a reasonable long finish. Underneath the easily noticeable raw pine-like herbal character is a soft citrus note that is a mix of ruby red grapefruit and tangerines. This beer has a fairly full body to it, it is definitely needed though to balance the aggressive hopping levels.

This is a beer for hop lovers, it is fairly aggressive. This beer is raw and hoppy and I almost think that this beer could use a bit more malt sweetness to amplify the hop character. A bit more malt might play up the citrus notes a bit more, and soften the raw hoppiness a bit. As it is you will definitely want to be a hop head to enjoy this one. Luckily I can be, and am, so this is quite enjoyable.

If you like big APA’s then this is the ticket. Very nice fruit and hop aroma. Like cutting into a grapefruit. The flavor is fresh-squeezed with prominent west coast hopping. Fine mouthfeel, medium heavy hop finish. Very good. On tap, Ginger Man NYC.

22oz bottle pours mahogony with a nice offwhite rocky head that stays pretty well. Aromas of floral and grapefruit hops with a little caramel malt behind it. Flavor starts off with those caramel malts and very sweet but the finish is all citrus hops. Somewhat bitter finish. Medium bodied and a smooth drinker.

Ruddy light brown color with a moderate foamy cream colored head. Pure hops aroma, with grapefruit and a hint of pine. A mild presence of light caramel and pale malt. From a hops head view this is a nice sniff. Mild sweet caramel malt start and are quickly escorted out by the bitterness and acidity of the hop. Quite biting and unbalanced in the mid to late quaff. This almost seems to need some rest for things to mellow and blend.

22oz bomber poured a nice ruby color with a 2 finger thick frothy white head. Wonderful hoppy aroma with notes of pine and citrus. Also a good malty scent. Similar smell to a good IPA. Great flavor combining intial caramel malt sweetness with sharp hop bitterness. Medium-body with a great dry finish. Very nice beer, my favorite from Lagunitas!

Draft at San Diego Brewing Company. I really liked this stuff. Deep red with a decent head. Floral notes in the nose, along with some malty overtones. The Flavor was very malty, some sweetness in there and a very nice hoppiness that really brought it together. I liked this one.

On Tap. Clear dark amber color. Big Amarillo hop aroma. Good malty balance with an over-the-top bitterness as well. The taste seems to me to be all over the place but I wouldn’t say that’s all bad in this instance. Well made and quite enjoyable.
