COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Special Ale is, in reality, a reconstructed exhumation of the very first ale that we ever brewed way, way back, in 1993. Brewed with a big head, a muscular malty thorax, a silky texture & all strung together with a hoppy sweet nerve sack... yum.

Bottle. Red amber with medium dense white head. Aroma brutal hoppy wit grape notes. Taste bitter and quite hopp dominated, grape and some malty sweetness in the body. Too aggressive and brutal for me.

22 oz bottle. Pours slightly deeper than medium amber with an off-white head and a few floating particles. Hoppy pine, floral, fruity hop aroma with toasted malts leading the way. Similar flavor profile. A pretty nice mix of flavors that certainly has grown on me.

Fresh bomber poured into a Duvel glass. Pours a somewhat hazy copper red with an inch of thick off white head that leaves nice lacing. Typical aromas of pine, caramel, citrus, and toasted bread. You can tell it’s a red. Upon first sip the beer has a citric, piney quality up front that is quickly met with caramel and bread malts, maybe even sourdough. It’s a tasty red that sticks to your mouth and doesn’t have much noticeable alcohol or anything. A solid beer for the style.

Aromas of intense hops, pines, toffee and caramel. Appears a darkened copper with a moderately heavy white foam rim. Taste is really nice with a heavily hopped mouthfeel. Notes of herbs, pines, earth, resin, malty caramel sweetness, subtle toffee, and a really nice metallic toasted malt on the back end. Overall, actually really impressed by this one. Extremely hop forward but still having a lot of sweet malts. A rating.

Bomber from Which Craft in Austin. Muted, but somewhat fruity aroma. Poured a gorgeous coppery red with a two-finger off-white head. Taste is malty but with a generous dose of hops to make it interesting without leaving it bitter. This is a very solid offering.

Bomber poured into a snifter. Aroma is kinda muted... subtle caramel and crystal malts, pine and grapefruit hoppy and sweet yeast. Flavor is raisins, dates, grapefruit bitterness, sweet then finishes bitter and floral. Palate is super smooth. Really good red. Would taste in the 4s UF the aroma was bigger.

Poured from a bomber (or 3) into a pint glass, love the color. I think the commercial description of "a muscular malty thorax" is exactly correct. It is very smooth and drinkable and packs a punch. Put it in a 6 pack, sell it year round, and we’ll be all set.

Bottle from Lazy Dog. Pours a reddish amber with off white head. Aroma of floral hops and malts. Taste of malt, almost like unsweet tea, with some hoppiness.

Brown our with a single finger of off white foam. Nice malts with hint of hoppiness. Flavor is well balanced and smooth with a mixture malts and hops that goes down easy. This is one of the better Imperial Reds I have had. Definitely a buy when seen.

Pours a copper-ruby red with a two finger off white head with nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus, pine, dankness, tropical fruit, sweet malts, caramel, dark fruits, light toffee, and some toasted malts. Taste is citrus, pine, tropical fruits, caramel, toffee, figs, dark fruits, sweet malts, toasted bread, and some very light booze. Has a medium-full body with a semi creamy, semi-moderately bitter, medium-long, pretty well balanced finish. Overall, a pretty tasty, complex, and well balanced strong ale.

Poured from bomber into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a nice deep copper-ruby color with a one finger head of fizzy foam. The head fades rather quickly to leave a light level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite robust of hoppy smells with a great showing of pine and grapefruit citrus. Along with these aromas are some nice roasted malt and sweeter smells of caramel as well as sweeter dark fruit aromas of a bit of cherry and fig. Overall the aroma is quite nice. Taste – The taste begins with a very chewy and lightly toasted bready flavor with some hints of caramel sweetness within. While the nose had quite a bit of caramel, upfront the caramel is very light with it only gaining a little bit of intensity as the flavor moves onto the end. The nose also depicted a more hoppy aroma, which the taste was not upfront. There was a little bit of citrus grapefruit hop at the start, but it was light. As the taste advances however, the citrus gets stronger and is joined by a good sum of a pine hop flavor, with the two melding well with the very bready and roasted flavors of the brew. With a little bit of a herbal hop and some cherry and brown sugar that come at the end, a very pleasant and decently hopped but still roasted and lightly sweetened “red ale” taste is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. Both are fantastic for the big bready and red ale flavors of the brew, with them accentuating the pine and citrus hop nicely but yet still maintaining enough effervescence and thinness to be good for the sweeter flavors of the brew. Overall – Another great brew by Lagunitas with tons of fantastic flavor and at one fantastic bomber price. They are consistently one of the better (if not the best) breweries for the cost. Well done!!
