Having downed his forth Imperial Stout of the day, the wild eyed charlatan from Voldvostogniaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with a hemorrhagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire. Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, weird, and drunk. But even as the proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and a threat of being sent to a futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real "suka", as they say in the old country. Big, black, bourgeois, bolshoy, belligerent, buxom, and scary - this is our version of the chaotic end of an era in a bottle.

Bomber for about $5. Pours very dark brown-black and shiny with a tan head that fades quickly to a thick rim/coating. Aroma is a soft cocoa, chocolate, coffee and spice. Taste is roast malt and coffee, with a fat boozy middle followed by a bitter, slightly dry hoppy finish. A bit short and not as complex as other, better ImpS. Impressions are booze and coffee. I guess there are worse combinations! A bit of a (rare) miss for Lagunitas. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance - black. Small head. Aroma - distinct but can't put my finger on it. Mouth - very creamy. Taste - very long bitter finish. Bold front. Nothing special as far as special flavors. Good. Overall - solid. Not the best stout for me but solid. I like the creamy texture. Not overbearing.

On tap @ Rosamunde, Brooklyn, NY. Clear dark brown color with thick creamy light brown head and good lacing. Aroma of heavy roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and some woody notes. Tastes starts with moderate sweet roasted malt, coffee and chocolate, a bit sourish liquorice following, warming alcoholic mouthfeel and heavy bitter finish. Full body, thick texture and average carbonation in palate. Another excellent brew for Stoutland empire...

Deep brown with a smooth flavor. Chocolate and roasted malts balance well egg the hops and caramel. Good beer.

22 oz. bottle from the liquor store down the street. Pours rich black with a one finger tan head that leaves lacing. Aroma is floral, grassy, chocolate, coffee, resin, licorice. A little too bitter for my taste, but it is certainly rich and satisfying with no off-flavors. There is a significant alcohol burn to the tongue and throat. The 9.9% abv is not hidden at all. It was a really good buy at less than $5. Full bodied, thick, oily texture, soft carbonation, and astringent finish. It’s like a slightly misguided flavor bomb.

bottle shared by VT, thanks bro. pours clear medium dark brown, red tint, with a small very light beige head, some retention. roasted acidity, mushrooms, pepper, red peppers, burnt caramel, some nuts, soap, licorice. moderate carbonation, light body, sweetish and grassy mineral finish. blah. weak and very disappointing.

22 oz. bomber from Safeway in San Jose, CA. Chocolate and woody notes from a very dark brown body with a foamy and lasting tan head. More dark chocolate and dry wood right away followed by a drying bitterness and alcohol warmth. Thick, creamy body with a sweetness that sticks to the tongue. An earthy, leafy, slightly vegetal taste floats up from all this. Finishes sweet, dry and bitter.
