COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Having downed his forth Imperial Stout of the day, the wild eyed charlatan from Voldvostogniaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with a hemorrhagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire. Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, weird, and drunk. But even as the proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and a threat of being sent to a futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real "suka", as they say in the old country. Big, black, bourgeois, bolshoy, belligerent, buxom, and scary - this is our version of the chaotic end of an era in a bottle.

A- Pours a deep, black hue letting almost no light pas through. Crowned with a light brown head that leaves lots of lacing. S- Toasty, fig, coffee, burnt toast, fairly faint. T- Roasty up front, coffee, burnt toast flows into dark fruit - plum, fig and finishes with some residual sweetness. M- Thick with low carbonation. D- Decently drinkable. Not as complex or dark as I would have liked but it is a solid Imperial stout.

Sample at Hopfest 2014. Comes almost black with a nice brown head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and some dark fruit. Well made.

Aroma is a fresh floral hoppiness shared with some malt roastiness but that is about it. Taste is more complex than the aroma. A fresh roastiness right away that has some chocolate and mocha hints. The bitterness is well balanced and finishes very smoothly without much bitter tang.

This is a really fine stout. Burnt notes, a slight Bourbon vanilla flavor flavor to it. A sharpness on the finish which I like. Nice lingering flavor.

Pours black with very little head. I’m getting nothing but a sour, soy sauce kind of smell. Not pleasant. Light coffee, roasted malts in the taste. Thin and boring mouth feel. This is the worst beer from Lagunitas I’ve ever had, which is a shame; they’re one of my favorite brewers. To me this is drinkable, but just barely.

Decent enough imperial stout. Dark cola pour. Charcoal and coffee in nose. Big coffee, chocolate, more char, slight hop bite. Heavy and sticky.

Bottle. Thick black pour with two big fingers of tan head. Aroma, roasted malts, some hoppiness, anise, ash, very nice. Taste, lots of roast, coffee, a bit of a thin mouthfeel, finishes fairly bitter and leaves a lingering anise like aftertaste. Nice stuff.

Pours a dark brown with big brown head leaving good lacing. Aroma is roasty with dark malts, chocolate, charcoal. Taste is tart, earthy roast mixing strangely with the hops, which bite pretty hard in the end with just a hint of fruit but not enough to balance. This one is all over the map and a little thin overall. Sweeter than most with more caramel than cocoa in the finish. Not terrible, but certainly a let-down for this style and this brewery.
