Having downed his forth Imperial Stout of the day, the wild eyed charlatan from Voldvostogniaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with a hemorrhagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire. Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, weird, and drunk. But even as the proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and a threat of being sent to a futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real "suka", as they say in the old country. Big, black, bourgeois, bolshoy, belligerent, buxom, and scary - this is our version of the chaotic end of an era in a bottle.

From a Cask: pours black with an off white head. Very little carbonation, canít really pick out the taste but one helluva beer.

Bottled. Pours pitch black with mild tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate with tons of coffee. Flavor is similar. Big coffee and dark chocolate with a Sort of difficult to describe quality. A certain sweetness to it. Maybe itís just the chocolate sweetness. Coffee bitterness aftertaste. Decent slightly syrupy mouthfeel to it.

The Imperial Stout pours black with a foamy brown head that lasts a fair while. The aroma is molasses and wood. The flavor is earthy, wood and molasses. Overall this is a pretty nice beer.

Bottle. Cola. Big cocoa aroma and roasted malt. The taste adds char and coffee. Light carb, a little thin on the mouthfeel at first but, as it warmed it became richer. Bitter finish. -- 10% abv is completely hidden. I’m impressed because I usually associate lagunitas with big hoppy beers. They nailed this one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Brutish, black and cocky. Coffee, chocolate milkshake with dried flowers. Semi thick. Roasty. Good. Drunk as fuck.

Opaque black-brown wit ha thick tan head almost like melted ice cream. Smell is coffee, some cocoa, hops tanginess. Taste is thick and smoky; coffee, barbecued meat. Good.

bomber shared...poured dark brown almost opaque, off white head and an oily lacing that quickly disappears. roasted malts, chocolate, some coffee notes in the nose. the flavor is to me not strong enough for and imperial but for a regular stout this is pretty smooth and tasty. roasted malts and lots of sweet chocolate. not totally balanced but good enough to drink and enjoy.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2014 Expectation: lagunitas has the hoppy beers down, but Iím skeptical about the darker ones
Hardware: bomber into Le Duvel.
Nose: chocolate and coffee flavors with some added hops
Sip: rich malt presence and complex at that; latent milk/lactose
Taste: bitter heavy and also complex
Conclusion: Lagunitas for the win - they are not a one trick poney.

more like a porter in my opnion. has that smoked flavor with a bourbon finish. kind of like cooked ham at a diner taste and smell. pours dark in color and is really strong in alcohol. not one of my favs by lags. had at their taproom.

Bottle. A: Solid black with an enormous cappuccino head. Lacing. N: Big cocoa, coffee, molasses, burnt brown sugar, and vanilla. Roast in spades, prevalent hops lend a black peppercorn and pine to the proceeding. T: Big bitterness, sweetness in spades. Leans more to the former, for sure. M: Heavy, dense body. Alcohol is held in check. O: Meal in a bottle. I donít remember enjoying this as much when I first started drinking craft beer, so Iím glad I gave this one another chance. Great price for a stalwart beer.

As of late I can not find the time to take tasting notes of each beer I sample. I would like to track and record my thoughts of each so I will just use the simple scoring rubric until more time is available.
