COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Having downed his forth Imperial Stout of the day, the wild eyed charlatan from Voldvostogniaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with a hemorrhagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire. Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, weird, and drunk. But even as the proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and a threat of being sent to a futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real "suka", as they say in the old country. Big, black, bourgeois, bolshoy, belligerent, buxom, and scary - this is our version of the chaotic end of an era in a bottle.

Bomber to tulip glass. Very off-putting nose of sour milk & soy sauce. Some chocolate & roast in the background. Same flavors initially, as well. But as it warmed, got more of the typical RIS flavors- sweet chocolate, mocha coffee, roasted malts. A little too sweet for me. Plus w/ the initial sour nose, I was not impressed. Expected more from this brewery.

Shared bomber. Dark black pour with tan head. Nose is roasty dark malt cacao, molasses, nuts. More dark malt in the flavor, dense palate with well hidden alcohol, smooth finish.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, dark brownish black pour with mocha head, aroma brought notes of dark cocoa, roast, coffee, slight spice. Taste is a mix of dark chocolate, roast, coffee, slight caramel, finishing sweet, slightly roasted. Reasonably priced for an Impy!

[2/14/15] Draught at Lagunitas in Petaluma. Black with a tan head. Roasty and coffee-ish aroma. Bittersweet flavor with roast, coffee and some dark chocolate. Full-bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Good stuff.

I love stouts. I also love Lagunitas and generally have a fridge full of their beers. While I LIKED this imperial stout, but I did not LOVE this imperial stout. Dark pour, tan head, roasty this and that, chocolate coffee malty just as you would expect. Off sweet and an odd bitterness on the finish that threw the whole thing just slightly off and seemed to bring the alcohol out too far. Drank this the day after a Ballast Point Imperial Stout and it just didnít measure up.

Itís all about big, bitter chocolate. This beer pours dark brown, the light-tan head fades to nothing quickly and leaves no lace on the glass. This stout smells like bitter chocolate and tastes like bitter chocolate and coffee. A little hop tingle on the back of the tongue.

Bottle. Near pitch black in color with a steady tan head. Fresh espresso, some fluffy chocolate mousse and bit of slightly spiced coffee liqour in aroma. velvety smooth. Nice. Somewhat bitter chocolatey flavored coffee in taste. Bit of burnt malts in the end.

Beer #11 of 13 in blind tasting.
A lighter imperial stout but definitely an impy. A little alcohol and slightly ashy. Low hop and low acidity.
For the aggregate, 3rd best but in the same category as the top 3.

Bottle (22oz $4) Black with one finger tan head that disappears pretty quickly. Aroma roasted malts and some coffee. Pretty bitter finish without the nice chocholate flavors I was hoping for. OK but will seek other imperial stouts.

Imperial stout blind tasting, sample #11 of 13. Great pour. Roasty, ashy, dense creamy khaki head. Roasty like a hot dog -- yeah, Iím of classy descriptions dudes. Sweet, creamy. Metallic. On the sweet side, but still nice balance. Good roast, but a little too sweet for my taste [still in the top half of beers on the night].

1pint 6 fluid ounce bottle. Pours a thick pitch black with a one finger tan head. Aromas of molasses, black coffee, dark rum, light ash, brown sugar, and a light fruity note. Not as full bodied as I would expect an imperial stout, but still on the sweeter side with molasses, raisin, dark rum, a light brandy note, and mineral hopping that leads into light earthy notes, molasses, mineral notes, and dark coffee and a much drier finish than one would expect. Iím kind of surprised by the low ratings. I agree, it doesnít really fit the definition of an "imperial stout". It comes across as more of an "imperial porter", and an excellent one at that. The alcohol is hidden well, and there is a lot going on with the flavours with no one taste really dominating. At $4.49 a bottle, this guy is a bargain and a half!
