Purchased this as a price competitor to sam smith oatmeal stout, pleasantly surprised that a cheap imperial could hold up in flavor to the regular stout version of sam smith. Great smooth taste, sharp alcohol bite that quickly fades. served cold this beer could easily be mistaken for a regular stout. definitely a new staple of my collection, the local specs cannot keep it stocked.

This is a really nice imperial stout, but unfortunately I think it fell a little short of the standard weíve seen here on RB. It pains me to say such a thing because I love Lagunitasí IPAs. Given the high score (3.8), I donít think this is a great imperial stout. Itís pretty average. But an average imperial stout usually scores around 3.7+. This one pours a pure black color with a brown head. The head leaves a bunch of lacing around the glass. The nose is all about coffee and chocolate, with a bit of cream and vanilla thrown in. I also sensed a little floral hops and earthy, toasted malt. The body is dangerously smooth and drinkable. The flavors just donít seem to be there, though. I taste a lot of coffee and chocolate, along with some dry and semi-bitter hops. But that explosive, high-octane feel just isnít there. The beer finished dry, but sweet with a creamy palate.

To begin with, I opened this bottle on a lonely thuesday night after seeing this beer is rated 46 in itís style... To be really honest, I disliked it even before opening the bottle after reading many bad comments - wich I tought would be relevant because the only beers I ever knew about Lagunitas Brewery were ales that were to me their gret line of beers. I rapidly foud out I was way wrong... This imperial stout is outstanding! The first pouring (my bottle is 1 pint 6 oz so I ha a few) revealed a thick medium-bubbles beige head. The aroma were discrete until I dived in... Oh my God! I am having a big coffee and bourbon taste invading my whole mouth at every sip! Curiously, these flavours and palate are not heavy and agressive, but smooth and subtile as a kiss from my beloved partner in life! No weird/bad after taste. The beer leaves you with a beautiful warmy mouthfeel! I know this review may look weird in the way itís written, but I needed to described that very moment more thant this beautiful beer itself. Btw, english is not my first language so excuse in advance any mistakes!

Bottled. Black with a twine colored, frothy head that is mostly diminishing. Aroma: raisins/plums, molasses, slight charred wood, bittersweet chocolate, a touch of smoke and black coffee - a good mix of bright, sweet highlights atop a rich, earthy body. Smoke is more pronounced in the flavor, which is slightly bitter and sweet slightly less so. Flavors of dusty earth, coffee grounds, roasted pecans, chocolate malts and graham crackers. Light-to-moderate carbonation with a slightly slick mouthfeel. Really hit the spot.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Lagunitas Imperial Stout has a thin, beige head, thin lacing left on the glass, and a dark brown (essentially black) appearance. Aroma is of dark-roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee, but the smells are rather faint. Taste is somewhat bolder, with added sourness, char, bitterness, and acidity. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Lagunitas Imperial Stout finishes powdery and strong. Overall, this does not have the boldness or intensity of Narwhal or Old Rasputin, but it is still outstanding. 3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This was a huge disappointment. Something off in the aroma and flavor. Very thin for an imperial stout. Not the bone warming chocolate espresso oil I expect for this style.

Bomber->snifter. Deep brown with huge frothy tan head. A: chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, vanilla. T: chocolate, vanilla, sweet malt. Bit thin, with a bitter licorice and dry hop aftertaste. Taste is off.

Awesome thick mouthfeel. Sweet malty chocolate more than coffee. Head in nice and fades. Slight chalk flavor an average imperial.

Bottle: thick and black pour like oil. Sweet choco aromas and sweet Flavors of chocolate abound. This is a good one to have as desert. It was enjoyed outdoors around the firepit. Fitting.
