3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
1 pint, 6 ounce bottle- poured out an opaque brown with a thin, khaki head that quickly dissipated. Alcohol aroma dominated any more subtle components. Taste was toasted malts and that was about it. Palate was pleasant, moderately mouth filling, almost more of a porter than stout. Overall impression was almost a commodity stout, a bar brand. Not bad, but not particularly memorable, either.

Let the others talk about the lacing and aroma of toasted tahitian vanilla--I think this is a really solid IS. It’s bold with coffee and malt with a slightly viscousness that enhances the boldness. I find it a touch sweet, but that’s my only criticism.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber to stout glass. Pours black as fuck with a beige head. Lacing left but not much on my glass. Aroma is bitter coffee and roasty malt. Taste is much the same but with more chocolate notes cropping up. Finish is oily and decently thick with a hop bitter balancing. Good shit though. Cheap and worth it.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Reviewed from notes. Just when I thought I got all of Lagunitas, I find this one. Here’s the rest.
This was a 22 oz. bottle.
About half of this was poured into a pint glass and the other half was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a nice pure dark brown close to black color with a softly dissipating one finger white to off white foamy head. There’s a nice gently sliding lacing.
The smell has a nice luscious enticing chocolate to coffee to light black licorice
The taste had a fairly decent enriching bitter coffee balancing with the chocolate that has both dark and milk elements to it. The licorice does come back and lets a nice decent earthy dark fruits to come in just a tad.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body trying to show a slight heavier feel but really leaning to the medium side. The carbonation seemed right on par for the style and for me as it was mainly nice and smooth and coated my tongue nicely.
Overall, this was a really nice RIS well worthy of having again.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber with some age on it, brought out of the cellar to share with fellow geeks. Poured to snifters showing a black/brown hue, with a decent, brownish tan head that reduced to a bubbly layer, and left a light film along with spots of lacing. The nose was quite roasted, with notes of molasses, wood, light smoke, and caramel sweetness. Medium to full bodied, with soft carbonation, the taste was similar notes as the aroma, moderate hop bitterness, and alcohol that had mellowed some, but was well integrated into the flavor. Tastefully aged.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: 0.5L mug
From: BevMo in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $4.25 (special 2-for-$8.50 w/ BevMo card)
Purchased: June 26, 2014
Consumed: June 28, 2014
Poured a pitch black color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky tan head. Above average-to-good amount of spider web lacing on the sides of the glass. Above average-to-average retention on the top.
Very nice on the nose. Got cappuccino, toffee, caramel, chocolate, hot fudge, chocolate milk, some bitter coffee beans and faint black crayon.
Tasted pretty close to the smell, although more bitterness. Bitter cappuccino, toffee, caramel, bitter crayon, dark chocolate, some booziness late and some bitter roasty malts.
Full body. Slick texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, bitter, rather warming finish.
A decent imperial stout, but not as good as I’d hoped.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
The majority of a 22 oz. bottle, consumed on 6-27-14. Scents of raisin, chocolate, plum, lemon tartness, char, clay, plastic, and caramel. Aroma definitely could be better. Pours dark brown with a large amount of thick, taupe/tan head. Produces good lacing. Simple, dry taste features flavors of caramel, roasted red pepper, and milk chocolate. Medium to full body. Lively in the palate. Overall, simple and subpar for the style. Disappointing, but, given how strong the imperial stout category is, Lagunitas’ entry is a pretty good craft beer overall.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Black with tan head. Nose is bittersweet chocolate, earthy roast, faint spicy noble hops. Flavor is the same plus some pleasant ashy smoke and the herbaceous/spicy hops more prominent than aroma. Pretty dry and has a silty texture. No hint of booze really. Not only is this solid, the value is insane and pretty much unmatched by any brewer I’m aware of.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A very nice imperial stout. Pours a deep inky black with a tan head. Smells of a bit of vanilla. Taste starts smooth and sweet, with some vanilla. Campfire and some booziness in the finish. Had on tap at the brewery.
