COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Having downed his forth Imperial Stout of the day, the wild eyed charlatan from Voldvostogniaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with a hemorrhagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire. Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, weird, and drunk. But even as the proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and a threat of being sent to a futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real "suka", as they say in the old country. Big, black, bourgeois, bolshoy, belligerent, buxom, and scary - this is our version of the chaotic end of an era in a bottle.

Pours black from bomber, with dense, moderate tannish head and chocolate malt aroma. Flavor leads with moderate dark chocolate, then sweet cola mid-palate followed by American hops bitter notes. This stout has a medium-full mouthfeel that is plush, which is countered by an alcohol assertiveness and yeast or hop bluntness in finish. Thereís an elusive vinous and floury (not flowery) quality that adds a complexity. This was my first choice (of four) for in blind tasting for best stout in Sonoma County. (I did not detect the signature Lagunitas taste that I often do from their offerings: a residual sweetness, like concentrated kettle corn.)

1,000th Rating! Purchased from Learyís, the Amesbury location.. $6.50 for the 650 mL bottle. To oversized snifter, it pours a mahogany-tinted dark brown/black combination with which a razor-thin off-sienna headhalf a pinky in length stood. Aromas of cracked chestnuts, sorghum molasses, roast, flaked barley/spent grain, muddled mint, graham crackers, coffee syrup, wild rice, oak chips, and as archaic as it gets, bird seed. Tastes the same (yes, even the bird seed), with the addition of grill char, unripe blackberries, caramel, earthy hops, and table sugar. Youíd think Iíd go out of my way to get a King Henry for this special occasion, but no. Iím a man of the people, not of the hoarders. This imperial stout was a decent time, but at the end of the little session, itís just not going anywhere. No crunch, no chew factor, either. Eh, whatever. Iíll try anything once.

Dark brown pour, black in the glass with a small tan head. Decent lacing and nice legs. The aroma is mostly medium roast coffee, with some chocolate and burnt notes, some faint spicy hops, and a bit of alcohol. The flavor brings strong cocoa, chocolate, and burnt malt. Fairly strong alcohol, and a finish that is a good mix of sweet and bitter.

Black as night pour. Smells like an old barn. Taste is malty and sweet. Palate is full bodied, thick on the back end. Overall, a wonderful Imperial, will get again.

22oz bottle. Pours dark brown almost black with a tan head. A bit thinner than most imperial stouts but still not bad Best thing is that it is almost half the price of most of the other impyís.

This is a really nice imperial stout, but unfortunately I think it fell a little short of the standard weíve seen here on RB. It pains me to say such a thing because I love Lagunitasí IPAs. Given the high score (3.8), I donít think this is a great imperial stout. Itís pretty average. But an average imperial stout usually scores around 3.7+. This one pours a pure black color with a brown head. The head leaves a bunch of lacing around the glass. The nose is all about coffee and chocolate, with a bit of cream and vanilla thrown in. I also sensed a little floral hops and earthy, toasted malt. The body is dangerously smooth and drinkable. The flavors just donít seem to be there, though. I taste a lot of coffee and chocolate, along with some dry and semi-bitter hops. But that explosive, high-octane feel just isnít there. The beer finished dry, but sweet with a creamy palate.

To begin with, I opened this bottle on a lonely thuesday night after seeing this beer is rated 46 in itís style... To be really honest, I disliked it even before opening the bottle after reading many bad comments - wich I tought would be relevant because the only beers I ever knew about Lagunitas Brewery were ales that were to me their gret line of beers. I rapidly foud out I was way wrong... This imperial stout is outstanding! The first pouring (my bottle is 1 pint 6 oz so I ha a few) revealed a thick medium-bubbles beige head. The aroma were discrete until I dived in... Oh my God! I am having a big coffee and bourbon taste invading my whole mouth at every sip! Curiously, these flavours and palate are not heavy and agressive, but smooth and subtile as a kiss from my beloved partner in life! No weird/bad after taste. The beer leaves you with a beautiful warmy mouthfeel! I know this review may look weird in the way itís written, but I needed to described that very moment more thant this beautiful beer itself. Btw, english is not my first language so excuse in advance any mistakes!
