3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black from bomber, with dense, moderate tannish head and chocolate malt aroma. Flavor leads with moderate dark chocolate, then sweet cola mid-palate followed by American hops bitter notes. This stout has a medium-full mouthfeel that is plush, which is countered by an alcohol assertiveness and yeast or hop bluntness in finish. There’s an elusive vinous and floury (not flowery) quality that adds a complexity. This was my first choice (of four) for in blind tasting for best stout in Sonoma County. (I did not detect the signature Lagunitas taste that I often do from their offerings: a residual sweetness, like concentrated kettle corn.)

Feels like 5% stout, so deliciously smooth at 9.9% and pours a lovely thick pearly-white head. Voluptuous. Totally decadent with caramel and cereal notes. Black as coal with a thick pour that looks like watery molasses.
Full bodied and heavy for beer in general, but at this percentage, it feels moderately bodied and oily on the tongue. Very nice. 2 or 3 of these and you’ll sleep like a baby.

This had all the characteristics of a true stout withe the dark chocolate and coffee bitterness with the smooth malt finish. Enjoyed sipping every last drop. By far my favorite beer from Lagunitas!

From bomber. Wow. I like this so much more than so many of the imperial stouts I?ve had. (Maybe it helps that I’ve had this cellaring for a year or so.) Black with huge tan head that would have overrun the glass had I not intervened. Big rich roasted malt and chocolate aroma and taste with coffee and a very pleasant gentle sweet and bitter balance. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Perfect lingering balanced finish. So nice.

Bottle @ home. marrone scuro, riflessi rubino. schiuma beige finissima e persistente.
