bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA Jun 28, 2009 Pours a light brown and semi clear with a large tan head. Beautifully roasted malt nose with a good burst of piny hops. Very well balanced beer and still drinkable at this high ABV. Tasty, I hope to get a couple more bottles of this. desurfer (1067), Pinellas Park, Florida, USA Jun 26, 2009 Clear reddish amber; small beige head. Aroma of piney hops and alcohol. Flavor is rich, with doughy hops, citrus hops, and some alcohol warmth. Nice strong, hoppy ale. DiabolikDUB (143), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 25, 2009 Poured from Bottle into Pint glass.
Pours a clear amber color with a finger or so of creamy off-white head that very slowly dissolves and never completely disappears. The aroma has some serious resinous piney hops along with some aromas that are reminiscent of barley (i.e. brown sugar, dried fruits) and some toasted malts. The flavor is sweet, sticky hops upfront with some dried fruits and toasted malts and a soft bitterness to round things off. This is a full to medium bodied beer and is very sticky but at the same time has ample carbonation. Very interesting, seems like a super hoppy barleywine overall. It does get much hotter as it warms up which makes it a sipper. moelikebeer (219), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Jun 24, 2009 Bottle. Clear, dark amber pour with a medium off-white head. Nice aroma of sweet malt and hops, mostly grapefruit. Similar flavor; sweet, almost syrupy malt flavor. Noticeable hoppiness with some grapefruit and piney notes. Overall nice beer. SETANTA (581), Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 24, 2009 Big, hoppy, grainy beer. Very clear red ale. Nice frothy head. Spicy, bitter and malty all at the same time. Still needs to mellow a bit, but should be tasting really well a few months down the road. I agree with a previous rating that mentions rye. This should be easier to confirm a few months from now once the bitterness dies down a little bit darbish (81), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 19, 2009 has a very strong odor of strawberry and citrus. aroma is enticing. appearance is a very reddish orange (think the color of the planet mars from the pictures taken by hubble telescope). Theres not much head or "lacing", but I don’t care. The appearance of a beer is unimportant, it’s the flavor that matters. most prevalent flavors are hops, sugar and a little tinge of alcohol. the general flavor is a little heavy, but that general flavor is pleasing so I don’t mind. Feels fizzy and thick in my mouth (like carbonated skim milk). Yum. Cirrhosis (610), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 12, 2009 "Sweet hoppy beer smoke. Dark copper body to reddish brown with a 1” tan cap looks good but unfortunately there was zero lacing. Standard west coast hop aroma with pool water and a sweet toffee finish. What’s with this aroma the more I smell the more of it I don’t like, I swear I just got some arm pit in here. first sip is hoppy but not as strong as the aroma. Taste is fairly IPAish but with a richer darker malt presence. There is an pine flavour that unfortunately turns soapy on some sips. This diffenatly full flavored and bold, but it’s coming across syrupy almost like this was made from concentrate and not enough water was added. Whatever this is good enough to drink but it has no personality of its own. Dammit I tasted the pool water again." hoppopotamus (182), Santa Cruz, California, USA May 29, 2009 Nice looking dark amber beer with a big fluffy creamy head. Aroma is very interesting. Big dark malt jumps out, lots of roasty notes, maybe even hints of coffee and chocolate, the hops are there too. The flavor is more of the same, hoppiness with the skeleton of a stout, and some nice alcohol warmth. Interesting beer.
