Goodgrief (1144), Middletown, Delaware, USA Sep 13, 2008 This might be the best Lagunitas beer to date. Seems more IPA like than a strong ale, but whatever. Light orange color with moderate head and lacing. Caramel malt. Just the right balance of sweetness to compensate for the generous citrus and pine bittering hops. Really enjoyable. Juancho (225), Clearwater Beach, Georgia, USA Sep 7, 2008 Bomber.... pours copper tone with hints of red, nice aromas of malt and caramel, slight, very slight notes of hops in the nose.
Well balanced, if not overly individualistic. Underhook (162), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours a red, average head, normal lacing. Weak nose. Tastes of sweet molasses, caramel. Lots of classic red, but nothing that stands out. Strong hops. Average red brew. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Sep 6, 2008 Draft at Tylers. Rich auburn color with a small white head. Nearly no aroma, just a bit of booze and some malts. Roasty flavors of burnt malts, some spicy hops, and a bit of a citrus in the finish. There are some bourbon-like notes as well. Not highly carbonated, but a clean finish. Interesting stuff...tasted a bit like a light barleywine to me. Ughsmash (3978), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Sep 5, 2008 Bomber, original bottling. Poured bright, fiery red with a well-retained, creamy cap of yellowy-white head. The aroma picked up a hefty dose of aggressive, juicy redder fruit hoppage, pine needles, alcohol, and notes of oxidation.. just kick you in the head, but I kinda liked it. The flavor opened with tangy grapefruit amplified by a large boozy presence.. followed closely by spicy pear and apricot notes.. grainy fruits, caramel, and more fiery alcohol rode out the long finish.. aggressive and engaging. Medium-plus bodied, spicy, and warm on the palate.. not intricate by any means, but it kept me interested. 00cobraR (1096), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Sep 3, 2008 Pours out a darker copper color with a nice off white head. aroma was malty, sweet and full of hops. flavor was sort of sweet with a nice balance of malt to the mix. finish was fairly hoppy and lasting. This was a rather good beer and something i would enjoy again. chicagobears (336), Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 Poured a reddish copper, sticky lacing. The malts were very well pronounced. Toasted caramel, sweet, balanced with some citrus hops. Had 2 bombers of this. v8powered (48), , Nevada, USA Aug 30, 2008 Bright copper color and flavor. The head is white and leaves lacy reminants that stick to the sides of the glass, leaving rings after each sip. Strong hops present in this beer that leave a piney/citrus flavor on the tongue. Malty finish but the hops stick around long after you taste. Close to an IPA but with more toasted carmel malt flavor. Alcohol is not over powering but definitely present.
