trevor211 (500), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 19, 2008 Pours dark ruby bronze with a good beige head. Aroma is floral, herbal hops, sticky sweet with malts. Good balance. Taste doesn’t disappoint - large quantities of floral hops and dark malts, though it seems a bit too much like both extremes (bitter hops and sweet malts) are simply mixed, and not well-blended. The taste is big, but it’s simultaneously too bitter and too sweet - the two flavors don’t manage to counter each other well enough. Still, I’m impressed with the full body and powerful flavor - it drinks more like a barleywine than a red, like they claim it to be. Crit (2399), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Jul 17, 2008 Nothing special.
Sparkling amber, lasting beige head.Intense bead.
Nose is sweet, lightly cat pissy.
Sweet start. Lots of bitterness in finish, hard to tell if from hops, alcohol bite, or both Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jul 16, 2008 Bottle thanks to Douglas88. I’ve had this one in my fridge for about a month, since my trade with Douglas. For some reason I’ve been working around it, as a red ale just hasn’t part of my craving lately. However, I this was much better than my expectations. A pretty hoppy red ale, with strong hop aroma. I really like the hoppy/malty balance here...which leads to a nice, slightly bitter finish. Maverick34 (686), New York, USA Jul 16, 2008 Bottled. Poured red w/decent to small head. Aroma is hops w/some sweet malts. Taste is hops and a bit woody w/caramel tinges. I agree with other raters insofar as Lagunitas’ brews all tend to taste rather similar. BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA Jul 16, 2008 Toasty caramel malt aroma, with some soapy hop notes as well. Pours a crystal clear amber color with a small ring of white foam. Light to medium bodied on the palate, quite resiny, with toasted toffee forming the malt backbone. Seriously though can Lagunitas brew anything but strong ales? pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 16, 2008 7-14-08 bottle
Clear amber with some okay filmy white head and a little lacing. Smell is very light hops and some sweet malt. Flavor is hoppy and has that rye/rind flavor - almost similar to a burning hop affect with a touch of sweetness too. Average medium carbonation. brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Jul 16, 2008 Bright fresh piney hop aroma ,reminds me of Christmas morning, sweet malt and hoppy taste, touch of some kind of spices and caramel ,little tinge of sulfur. Sweetness is almost sugary, with plenty of piney hops and a great bitter finish.
