ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Jun 26, 2008 Great beer. Pours a beautiful reddish brown color that looks like it is bleeding when the light hits it. Head is medium sized, off white and soapy and has green highlights and great lacing. Nose is toasted malt and lots of hops and some citrus notes. Taste is pretty sweet with lots of caramel, toast, grapefruit and malt. Tastes a bit dry too, maybe some dry hopping. Yum. djones (116), Michigan, USA Jun 24, 2008 copper caramel coloration. medium bodied and rather sweet. perhaps a tad bit too sweet. light citrus, caramel, malt, and grapefruit flavors. dry finish with lingering grapefruit. AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Jun 24, 2008 Fiery copper color with a light tan head, great lacing. Nice aroma is a bit boozy with caramel malt and piney hops, also a whiff of oxidation. Medium body. Decent taste mirrors the smell with sweet malts and piney hops. Not too bad. tagz (334), USA Jun 24, 2008 draft. hazy brown amber. toasty malt aroma backed by a mild hop. grains definitely dominate. the higher abv is well hidden but there is an unpleasant acidic taste on the back end. interesting to taste but nothing i would pick up again. kyzr (1119), Belgrade, Montana, USA Jun 23, 2008 Nice rich copper color with off-white head. Nose of roasted sweet malt with a bit hops. Flavor was more hoppy and citrus than aroma let on. Kind of sneaks up on you, but it was a pleasant suprise. Good balance between the two, with full flavor until the finish. luvcasks (178), USA Jun 22, 2008 Deep reddish caramel - shiny a new penny.
Lovely lasting whitish head.
Nose of toast and caramel notes (not the cloying variety) woody resiny hop notes, some yeasty notes and alcohol
Taste: Big brash clash of bag base malts with some toast and crystal malt with nice resiny woody spicy hop flavors
Palate: Silky finish with prolonged battle with drying resinous hops with resurgent malt notes leaning towards caramel and toast
Overall: A strong ale in all the terms - Pitched combat in a glass between big hoppy (woddy, resiny, spicy) notes and equally sizeable base malts with some caramel qualities showing... the only off putting thing is the alcoholic notes as the beer warms. Really tasty offering. I would say taste one fresh for the hop flavors - put one away to taste in a while as the malts show their presence (oh! and be careful the 8+ alcohol can be a doozy) hops1 (9), Boise, Idaho, USA does not count Jun 22, 2008 A very nice red ale! Great hop aroma and flavor that goes nearly perfectly with the sweet malt taste. Super kudos to the brewers and Lagunitas. jstraw (750), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 22, 2008 Red amber with big, foamy tan head / Nose of hops, citrus, and burnt sugar / Medium body, slightly sweet, with good malts and creamy hops, and with long, dry finish / Flavors of burnt sugar, grapefruit, and dry hops / And since they mention it, slightly reminicent of Anchor Steam.
