Very nice aroma with a mixture of pine hops, a hint of citrus hops, and fruit-laden, lively caramel malt. Flavor continues to be a brilliant blend of both worlds, working together seamlessly. Never too sweet despite such a showcase of rich malt. Very nice. 8-4-8-4-16/4.0
Rerate 1/10/09 Bottle. Aroma of tropical fruits, very juicy such fruits, and sweet, juicy malt, seemingly lots of crystal. Flavor less juicy, hindered and covered up by some astringency. Basically how I first perceived the beer except now I notice the astringency. Still enjoyed it though. 8-4-7-4-14/3.7. guzzler67 (1277), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 1, 2008 Dark amber appearance with a small, off white head and modest lacing. Aroma bounces from sweet malt to spruce. Taste is more piney hops that play well off the caramel malt backbone. Full bodied, nicely carbonated mouthfeel; long lasting finish. robforbes (1085), Bremerton, Washington, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 30, 2008 Gorgeous red colored ale with a thick slightly off-white head that lasts and lasts. Slight rye bread aroma with tons of piney hops on top of a caramel base. The flavor is at once bitter from hops and sweet and thick from the large malt background. Deceptively strong, not nearly as harsh as some IPA’s that hover in the 7% ABV range. This one is a winner in the strong ale category. Bradrcr (779), Renton, Washington, USA

Aroma is c-hop forward and dominated by grassy flora. Aroma is clear amber with a well maintained cream colored head. Flavor is earthy hoping forward and dominated as well, with only faint caramel malt coming through. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a medium-high carb texture. Overall, this was appropriately aggressive but just not easy drinking. smith4498 (865), Miami, Florida, USA

Sweet flavor with lots of hop bitterness (in a good way) backed up by toasted malt. Medium body with average carboniation. Another good brew from Lagunitas. hiphop (84), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 27, 2008 Poured a deep amber almost red with a thick foamy yellowish head. The aroma was citrusy grapefruit with a lot of hops. Had a thick full mouthfeel. On the first sip the hops are less at the front than the aroma would lead you to believe, although they are still very strong. The beer gets more bitter as it warms. djd07 (733), Houston, Texas, USA

The aroma is a rich hop with sugar and citrus notes. Very good sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is a rich malt with a hoppy finish. A very good American Strong Ale from Lagunitas.
