mephisto (1144), Taiwan May 21, 2008 a very strong offering from lagunitas: deep copper hue with beige head, it has floral aroma of citrus. the flavor is dominated by hops but the malt profile gives the brew an excellent balance. spikester (602), Salem, Oregon, USA May 21, 2008 Pours reddish amber with a good two inch light tan head. Good amount of sticky lacings.
Aroma is hoppy resinous.
Taste is big piney citrus hops with a minimal malt level. This is all about the hops and an obvious higher than normal abv. There is actually a bit of malt sweetness in the finish. Overall a memorable strong ale. Cool label art too. RSRIZZO (1345), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA May 19, 2008 Aroma is a fresh hop scent. Color is a nice amber with low carbonation and a thin but tight head. Taste is hoppy. Starting with a medium body it goes down smooth with a bit of a fizzy feel. Finish comes in hoppy with a little citrus, then a very faint malt sweetness that is quickly overtaken by bitterness. After taste is more citrus and at first just a hint of alcohol. Its a very tasty brew but it seems a little hoppy for a red ale. The guys at Lagunitas like hops but I think this would be a little better if they let the malt come though and make it a little richer. AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA May 18, 2008 Attractive dark ruddy brown pour with a thin off white head. Nose is the best thing about this one, with a caramel malt and caramel. The flavor is a bit malt astringent after the hop start. The finish is lingering and bitter. steview (901), Los Angeles, California, USA May 18, 2008 well now, quite the smooth kicker of an ale! slightly spicy; it does have a slight vegetable ale thing going on, but it’s good regardless. JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA May 17, 2008 22 oz bottle - Pours a crystal clear deep copper/amber hue with smallish off white head. Aroma is full of chewy kilned malts, toasted caramel, oak, fair amount of herbal hops, faint citrusy notes and touch of apricot. Flavor is malty, chewy, medium caramel, hint of lemon and apricot. Palate is nicely thick, and finish is firmly bitter. Overall a very nice brew. webjedi (249), Silver Spring, Maryland, USA May 17, 2008 Meh. A bit hoppier than I wanted for a red ale, however, as Lagunitas does specify, it’s big, and it being a CA version, hops, to the extreme, are required. Pours a orange-tinged red/copper. Full bready hop head (about 1 inch, given a slow pour). The malt and creaminess does come through well, a little chewy though. Just a bit bitter (duh!), and poured with a hint of orange blossoms on the nose. (Bottle Pour 5/17/2008) BeerPrince (1701), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 17, 2008 Dark amber with medium sized off white head. Aroma is spicey with lots of cinnamon and some citrusy hops. Flavour is rich with a funny celery flavour. Nice thick palate and finishes strong with a nice bitterness. Good stuff.
