| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 10, 2007 Updated: Mar 23, 2009This for me was the "best of show" at the March 9, 2007 Beer and Bread Beerfest in Arcata, CA.. Poured a simply beautiful dark amber tending toward copper that raised a remarkably attractive off-white head that left clean rings of lacing as it slowily diminished. Af first sniff you are simply blasted by the pine hops. Smells almost like an IPA. A couple swirls of the glass then released some wiffs of lemon. Mouthfeel is like liquid gold, with a wonderful zip to it without any bite. Flavors are more malts and caramel as it shows up as a strong ale instead of an IPA The alcohol is nicely hidden. You can probably tell I liked this one a lot, and for me is the best thing Lagunitas has ever produced. We simply have to get some on the shelves up here in Eureka so others can relish this fantastic brew. GG (1689), NorCal, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 4, 2009 How can you go wrong when you are going down the ailes of a standard grocery store and you’re staring down "Coors, Bud, Henry, Corona" and then that girl looks at you. No, you perv, not that girl. The girl on the bottle of Lucky 13. You see her giving you that look like, c’mon you wanna try me. At least once you do. And when you do, you’ll want to go back. The girl is that good.
OK, so it’s the beer that’s good and not the chick on the label (although that’s a nice label). Lagunitas pumps out beer after beer. Some good, others not so good. This one, thankfully, lands squarely in the land of good. The beer pours out a whiskey colored reddish brown, with a really nice thick tan head. Aromas are...hmm...caramel. Definitely lots of that, and a nice heaping dose of grapefruity hops. The grapefruity and the caramel mesh really well, with the aroma but there’s also a touch of iced tea character to the beer. Each harmonious yet quite independant of one another. Flavors have a nice toasted malt angle, perhaps a bit of scorched marshmallows is more like it. Combining with the malts is a really user-friendly hop profile that’s easy to enjoy. Piney resinous hops are quite the eye opener and to say this beer is enjoyable is spot on. Pours a clear brown amber with sticky off white head. Nose of sweet maltiness with hop citrus. Flavor is more floral citrus hoppy than the aroma. Great label. Great beer.
