georgekappus (296), Brookfield, Connecticut, USA Apr 17, 2008 Bottle. Pours a deep amber with a decent off white head and very good retention. Aroma was brown sugar and a bit of alcohol. Taste had a nice hop bite and some sugary sweetness. Nice full bodied beer. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 17, 2008 Bottle: Pours a hazy brown with a light tan head. Aroma, caramel, earthy, citrus hops. Flavor, earthy, caramel, toffee, some fruits, citrus. Tastes like lagunitas. DougShoemaker (2855), Toronto, Canada Apr 16, 2008 Aroma of orange hops, treacle, decent hops too, clear ruby, pours a small toffe head, plenty of lace. Flavour has those assertive citrus hops, good malt underpinning, some butterscotch, toffee and treacle notes, a touch of nuttiness as well. Full bodied, quite well balanced, some sweetness, with an appreciated bitterness, warming. Terrific! I wonder what Zappa would have thought of all this hype? couchand (182), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Apr 16, 2008 Amber-caramel, some white head.
Slight sharp toasty aroma.
Alcoholic, dry, coating.
Some cidery flavors.
Astringent and lingering. waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA Apr 13, 2008 bottle. brown/cranberry pour with clarity. off white frothy head. nutty, sour dry fruit, malty aroma. coffee, mild smoke, chocolate, balanced nicely. medium body. smooth. nicely hopped with mild bitter finish. this one exceeded my expecatations. fluids (364), USA Apr 12, 2008 Frank, Frank, Frank...You once quoted that in order to have your own country you had to have your own flag and beer. Lagunitas shows they care to honor you. This maybe a strong ale but it has malty barley notes inside of it. Caramel color think in mouthful very malty. Alcohol hidden well. Nice tones of chocolate. Available at Colonial spirits in Acton, MA nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Apr 12, 2008 650 ml. Chestnut with a four-finger head that settles into a lasting creamy ring and leaves a sugary sheet of lace on the glass. Faint, earthy caramel and peat aroma. Delicious caramel malt entry turns to slightly sour molasses, then more earthy with some peat, then a bit English fruity, then some cocoa and toasted nut. At the end some faint woody-herby (and even minty) hops. Medium body is smooth and a little sticky, but the earthy aftertaste provides enough dryness to keep it in check. Very nice; I guess the lower ratings are because this one has earthy peat-malt flavors, rather than being a hop (or roasted barley) bomb. But it’s an extremely smooth, highly drinkable and flavorful ale along the same lines as Old Chub. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Apr 12, 2008 Pours a slightly hazy deep maroon with a small white head. Smells fruits, apples and grapes, with some syrupy malts as well. The flavor has hints of pomegranate, very sweet and fruity. Maybe some plum as well. Definite sharp malt bitterness in there. A little caramel sweetness rounds out its flavors. Nothing too exciting. I dont get much alcohol heat at all. Drinkable, but unmemorable brew.
