Dogbrick (2816), Columbus, Ohio, USA Mar 4, 2008 Sample at Barley’s Smokehouse. The beer is a clear ruby-amber color with a medium thin light khaki head that dissipates slowly. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma is toasted malt and sweet fruit. Medium-bodied and clean with flavors of toasted malt, brown sugar and hops, plus a hint of cherry cough medicine. The finish is sweet and fruity and leaves a lingering hops aftertaste. Above average overall. bdigital (585), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA Mar 4, 2008 Bottle: From the locals tasting. Dark amber pour with a small white head. A fair amount of lacing present. Something was a bit off here and not in the "bad/infected bottle" sense. Very earthy, wet grass, light malts and very subtle piney hops in the nose. Strange, dirt flavor comes through with the resin hop flavors finishing it off. This ultimately just tasted very odd and unappealing. thornecb (1737), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Mar 3, 2008 Pours deep amber into a snifter. Off-white head quickly recedes to scum surface. Orange rind aromas. Sticky with upfront caramel and a lasting resin finish. nuplastikk (1161), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Mar 3, 2008 22oz bottle. Deep ruby red/brown color. Nice frothy head. Mild malty aroma. This one reminds me of a Scottish Wee Heavy or something along those lines. Mellows towards the end and displays some nice brown ale qualities. Very well done, with a good hoppy balance. Creamy, rich, and warming. Wonderfully mild but complex, certainly recommended. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 3, 2008 Bottle (22oz) shared with HogTownHarry, biegaman, rudolf & swoopjones -- courtesy of swoopjones. Pours a deep ruby-orange with a small diminishing frothy off-white head. Aroma’s mild, malty and sugary sweet along with notes of fruit and herbal hops. Malty flavour, also sweet, with some toastiness, fruit, light hops and sugar. Average bodied. My least favourite Zappa release, a little too sweet, almost cloying at times, I found it just O.K. thill25 (216), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 3, 2008 Bomber...This beer is very similar to Hairy Eyeball. It is so similar, I actually mentioned to my buddy that this was like drinking a Hairy Eyeball Lite. Poured a crimson brown w/ a slight off white head. Aroma of carmel and figs...Flavor was caramel, spice, dark fruits. A little watery on the palate. A nice beer, but not a homerun. BeerBlockaid (538), Jacksonville, Florida, USA Mar 2, 2008 meh, for a beer that boast a Zappa sporting the infamous bball fro and a molester mustache to make Ron Burgandy proud, it’s lacking in what I would have wanted from Lagunita’s. however, in fareness, or despise, when you release so many variations of brews, I guess it thins the lines a bit and not all can be winners.....Furthermore, enjoyable yes..Semi sweet with some bitter funnels, caramel, dry crystal malts...finishes with a small cloying sweetness. mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Mar 1, 2008 Pours from the bomber a translucent amber-brown color with copper highlights. Pour creates a meagerly thin beige colored head which fades quickly to ring of foam along the sides of the glass with a few spotty blotches topping the beer off. Aromas were quite tame with predominantly sweet notes of caramel candies, toffee, toasted bread, crystal malts and dark dried fruits. Average mouthfeel; decent body with a fine carbonation level. Flavors started out on the sweet side with moderate notes of caramel, nuts, toffee and a bit of cocoa powder. This is followed with a nice herbal/spice/citrus hop bitterness in the finish. Certainly not one of Lagunitas’ top brews here. Just an OK Brown Ale.
