At the height of the heat in the heart of the summer, we felt that the only cure was a raging mouthful of fresh hops and malt. Caution: May remove enamel from teeth. This is Lagunitas IPA pumped up by about 30%!

I wanted to try an IPA, but didn’t know where to go. So I chose this one, based on the good things I’ve herad about it. Man, it was good. Smell is really strong and faintly of orange. Pours a dark amber color with no head to speak of. Taste is very strong, so you know what your drinking. Would buy this IPA again.

Clear copper body topped by a medium off-white head. This is a very clean IIPA. The relatively low abv is well hidden so the beer feels like an intense IPA rather than an IIPA. Grainy malts, peppery hops, low sweetness, oily body. Very hoppy with medium bitterness. Excellent, trully a maxi-must.

Bomber. Oily-looking pour coalesces into a cloudy copper/orange hue. Uninspiring beige head nonetheless leaves a legacy of creamy swirls on the surface of the beer and glass. Upfront woody, grapefruity hop nose; pineapple/tangerine, caramel malt, diacetyl, and plastic mingle in its wake. Sappy and sugary on the tongue, woody and herbal with a huge pine/rosemary character. The fiinish is abuzz with charred sugar, orangey hop spice, and warming ethanol. Moderately full palate; gritty. Ashtray and pithy bitter aftertaste. Woefully identical to any grapefruit-and sugar "C-hop" double IPA.

Pours a cloudy orangish hue with a lasting white head. Obvious hoppy aroma, some pine, light floral, although I detect sweet glazed donuts... ? Anyway, body is light for the style, not thick or viscous like other 2IPA’s. Real citrus bite to this one. A decent beer, not too complex, not overloaded with hops, just easy drinking and tasty.

Bomber. Pours a hazy copper with a thick, creamy off-white head that last and laces the glass. Aroma is a blend of citrus, pine and resiny, with a hint of malty sweetness. Palate is medium, carbonation is medium, with very fine bubbles adding a light prickly sensation. Flavor is a very good balance of hoppiness and malty sweetness. For an imperial, you could complain that it’s not hoppy enough, but I find the balance very pleasing, much like that of DFH’s 90 minute IPA. Good hoppiness, but not overly bitter or astringent. Overall, a very enjoyable beer, one of the better ones I’ve had from Lagunitas. Definitely recommend.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2007 Re-Rate..Pours clear orange/amber with a small light tan head. Strong piny and citric hop aroma with a semi-sweet toasty caramel malt overtone. Big piny hops upfront that slowly lead into a roasted malt, and caramel finish. Medium sticky palate with a bit of spice and bitterness. Well-balanced and enjoyable. (Original rating. 8 4 7 3 16, either way a 3.8)

22 oz bottle. Pours cloudy copper color with minimal off white head. Aroma of hops and taste of piney hops with lite bitter after taste.

Bomber. Hazy light orange color. Perfect crisp, hop aroma. This is an intense hop beer. The alcohol is hard to detect, especially for a beer with a slightly higher percentage than many beers.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2007 22oz bottle. Pours hazy light orange. Wonderfully pungent, fresh hoppy aroma with a flavor to match. Possibly the most refreshing, thirst-quenching beer I’ve ever tasted. Very clean and crisp. The hops reign supreme here, and mighty tasty they are! Citrus flavors add to the surprisingly light-bodied, almost briskness of this beer. Dense, tight, wispy lacing that just coats the glass. 7.5% alcohol is virtually undetectable. This beer strikes me as kind of simple for a 2IPA, but in a refreshingly straight-forward, uncluttered, GOOD way. This is a beer that knows what it wants to be and succeeds with clarity of purpose. I can’t wait ’til summer to have this to cool down and chill out with. Excellent!

THis hazy orange ale poured with a decent off-white head. There is a nice blend of malt and hops, resulting in a pleasant balanced flavor that is initially slightly sweet, then a slightly bitter. There are noticeable citrus and pine characteristics. Overall, a pretty good quaff.
