3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20
Exactly the kind of Imperial I would expect from Lagunitas. Looks and smells like any good IPA. The taste is what separates this brew. Hops are definietly there, but there is a lot of fruits and citrus, with a little malt and possibly mint. This could be in its own category. Highly recommend.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This doesn’t have the power-punch of hops or intense bitterness as some other double IPA’s like Stone Brewery’s Bastard & Ruination offerings, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A couple of Stone’s beers are too bitter and a little unrefined for my tastes. Lagunitas Maximus is just a much more balanced double IPA. The hops are readily apparent in flavor, but they don’t overwhelm. Creamy citrus is and some malty sugar is introduced with each sip, but not spoiled by an aftertaste that is too bitter. Essentially, it boils down to individual tastes; this has a lot of character and balance for a double IPA, but not the extreme hoppiness of some competitors.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma had pine, ctirus, graitfruit and caramel. Taste had citrus and graitfruit hops. Very well balanced but kind of one dimensional. Very malty palate. This to me is more like a single IPA. Very nice brew.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
All the IPA aromas floral, pine and also some sweet malts. Copper color body and small off white head and lot of lacing. Citrus hop flavor that IPA’s are known for along with some sweetness. Dry fruity aftertaste on palate a good brew.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours amber-orange with a large pearl head. Decent lacing. Smells like a hop sandwich. Very citrusy flavor, with a piney finish. Not as extreme as other Double IPAs, but creamy in the mouth and fairly delicious.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Awesome summer beer, period. This beer has got it all, plenty of bitterness and hop aroma to keep things interesting, plenty of alc to keep you happy, plenty of malt to back up those to. But how do they keep it so damn easy drinking?!!!

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: OCT 25, 2005 [bottle] Pours dark copper - flavors are strong pine at first, then grapefruit and smooth malts. Strong bitterness lingers.. this is excellent.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
the beer poured a rich copper color and i have no idea about the head or lacing (wasn’t paying attention and it was poured into the biggest chimay glass ever!) flavor is easy with hints of pine, hops and malt (which creates a nice balance). very slight citrus/bitter flavor towards the end as well. i enjoyed this more than their ipa.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Translucent copper in color with a few miniscule bubble cloisters for the head. Consecutive pours yield somewhat of an icy head. Island party of sugar sweetened grapefruit, pineapple and papaya enzyme for the aroma, joining forces with orange extract and fresh honey. Flavor creates a nice encasement that seems to kick-start the saliva glands into overdrive, and then knock it back down to a dry, chafing finish. Oily, honey dipped hop pellets with borderline sour grapefruit characteristics. Some hovering citric oranges and lemon juice in both flavor and the causal palate response. Traces of dactylic alcohol, which seems improbable while looking at the stats. Admirable sweet malts give a honeysuckle composure, finishing with a bitterness that seems to dangle from the larynx. Well done.
