3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled. Golden coloured with a rather large head. A bit malty and very hoppy. Slightly perfumed but alltogether a pretty good body. Hints of pines and soap.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a pale amber with a marginal fluffy white head. Aroma dominated by floral hops. Smooth, clean, crisp and hoppy taste. Sweet maltiness and citrus notes come through as well. Well balanced; not too much alcohol noted. Very good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Orange-amber in colour, creamy beige tinged head, great lacing with about 1cm of sediment in the bottom of my glass. The aroma is of piney hops, caramel malts, some light alcohol, orange and grapefruit. The flavour is quite piney, lots of caramel sweetness, some orange citrus, earthy. Thick and chewy mouthfeel, medium body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes long with some alcohol warmth and lots of hops. Pretty good, I was surprised by the large amount of sediment.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
650ml brown bottle. Deep gold colour, full thick, white head, lots of sticky clinging foam. At first pine jumps out in the aroma, then lighter citrus notes, lemon and grapefruit, malt is barely there. Slight initial fruiiness, sweet orange, light caramel malt sweetness in the middle, finishes with abundant pine/grapefruit hop flavours, bittereness is moderate in intensity but long lasting. Medium creamy body, cabonation is light and soft. Alcohol is not noticable at all. This was my first Imperial/Double IPA, it was not quite as bold as I was expecting, but I was not disappointed. Rather I found it strong, hoppy and flavourful without being imposing. Will be returning to this beer often.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours copper with a dense off-white head that gives very nice lacing. The aroma has lots of floral and grapefruit hops with some spiciness and only enough malt to lightly balance the hops. Medium body with some fairly sharp carbonation. The taste starts with woody hops that are not harsh like many along with the floral and grapefruit traits on the aroma. The finish has lots of woody / piney hops with a touch of tree bark. This tastes to me like a middle ground between IPAs and IIPAs - solid effort.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The Maximus is indeed a beer to be reckoned with. It pours a medium amber color, crested by an average, fizzy off-white head. A mostly diminishing head leaves fair lacing in its wake, as your eyes peer down into the sparkling body below. Aroma is of moderate flowery hops and light yeast, with a presence of alcohol. Initial taste is moderately sweet, which caught us off guard, but we were slapped back into reality with a moderately bitter finish. Medium on the mouth, it has a watery texture with soft carbonation. A moderate alcohol tinge is left behind to remind you that this is not a light beer. Dog gone good!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: FEB 11, 2007 12oz Bottle. Pours orange with a creamt off white head. Piney hop and rich malty aroma. Initial flavor of toffee, caramel, toasted malt. The middle is bitter and piney. Fruity and juicy hop finish, with more malt and some hints of alcohol. Not bad. One of the more maltier beers from Lagunita. I drank this twice, once in a bomber and the other in a twelve ounce bottle. The bomber was better IMO. This is probably my favorite beer from them, and I would have no problem buying this again, especially at the price they charge for it.
