cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 14, 2008 First off, it’s Lag, so I’m expecting something overdone, as with most all their beers, total personality burst. Twist off somewhat shorter bottle. Flowery perfumy hop and weird fruit olfactory. Look is slightly darker than yer ubiquitous pale yellow but it’s still in that class. Very thin head wth a fine foam blanket. Little detectable carbonation on the palate during the initial swig. Starts off fairly fruity then morphs into a grating bitter chewing on green grapefruit rinds handsoap terribleness. Every taste is the same; first candy aroma then fruit commencement in mouth and finally a back of throat old dandelion greens sensation. wew. I must say however, since it has so much personality, I never would have guessed it was almost 8%! Freakish oily bastard taste hides overly alkied brew. Exceptionally annoying and intimidating. Yukky back of throat gathering lingering biting bitter to the breakingpoint. On style, try it hop head! dalekliz (546), San Diego, California, USA Sep 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours a hazy reddish-amber with a white ring. Aroma is bitter and hoppy, with a hint of sweeter fruits and some herbs and spices. Taste is sharp and bitter, of hops and herbs that picks up a dryer hoppiness as it goes. Lingering bitterness. Quite tasty double IPA. mar (1740), Rowlett, Texas, USA Sep 7, 2008 nice amber color with a cream head that dissipates into a thin head. huge notes of oranges and fresh hops. very easy on the palate with a malty flavor that finishes with a great slightly bitter hop note. imawayforapint (17), , Alberta, Canada Sep 4, 2008 Lovely orange hued beer with white head. Hoppy nose and a bit of citrus. Some sweetness in there, probable higher ending gravity/ higher mash temp than my preference for a 2IPA. Shades of sauterne-like marmalade on the palate. Not intensely hopped, and the malt tends to dominate. Bloody good beer, I just prefer a drier, hoppier 2IPA myself. rthbass (27), Vancouver, Washington, USA Aug 31, 2008 In the bottle from an undisclosed location.
Pours dark amber, almost red, with a small off-white head and clear as can be. Little to no lacing. Good bitterness. Not super powerful. I would expect a little more bitterness and flavor from an Imperial. Stronger than the standard Lagunitas IPA, but not by much. Good malt structure and hop profile. Citrus and spicy cinnamon notes. Signature Lagunitas IPA "soy sauce" flavor. Original and enjoyable but not my first choice. highibus (421), Mill Creek, Washington, USA Aug 31, 2008 Wow, pours my favorite color for an IPA. A nice caramel color with big floral bouquet. flavor is spot on, the hops attack your tongue but in a good way. Nice notes of sweet caramel and spicy hops. Really a perfect representation of the glorious IPA. drjay44 (757), Salida, Colorado, USA Aug 30, 2008 22 oz. bottle. Pours a lovely light tan head, nice golden color, nose was resinous, piney, and very slightly floral, initial taste not particularly big, finishing with nice hop spice and then bitterness, with a superb mouth feel. The nose was perhaps a bit monochromatic, and a bit short on floral aroma. Underhook (162), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA Aug 30, 2008 Updated: Sep 4, 2008Pours an enticing dark gold, smells of a bit of hops but not as much as I expected, relatively weak on the nose which surprises me as most IIPAs I’ve tried have a great nose. Looking down the ratings already here, it seems like I’m the only one who will score this weak on aroma- maybe my nose is too stuffed? Really just a bland bit of hoppy aroma, nothing special. The label lists 72.41 IBUs, pretty low for a 2IPA. First sip... wow, lots of hop punch, but balanced with a citric sweetness and some malt towards the end. Finishes long, honey/malty, and bitter. Perfect mouthfeel- sticky malt with adequate carbonation. Really, really enjoyable IPA, the best new IPA I’ve tried in months. I want to give this a higher rating but the nose just wasn’t there for me. Either way, excellent IIPA, a far better effort than Lagunitas’ regular IPA. Recommended for sure.
